Assists higher level inspectors in inspecting the construction, alteration, or maintenance of buildings and structures of limited size and scope for compliance with the provisions of building and zoning codes and ordinances and adherence to approved plans and specifications by inspecting phases of projects; and performs other related duties as required.
Responsibilities- Under supervision and following specific instructions, inspect various phases of construction, alteration, and maintenance of residential and small commercial buildings, signs, swimming pools, and similar structures.
- Verify that work is performed in accordance with approved plans and specifications.
- Check the quality of materials and methods of construction for walls, floors, roofs, foundations, lathing, and plastering.
- Inspect existing buildings to determine hazardous conditions, structural weaknesses or need for maintenance or repair.
- Identify construction projects or alterations being performed without building permits.
- Check the site location of buildings and structures for conformity with code requirements.
- Investigate complaints concerning dangerous building conditions, illegal alterations, illegal fence construction, and unprotected swimming pools.
- Issue stop work orders as directed.
- Keep records of inspections made and scheduled and prepare reports.
- Receive and check requests for building permits.
- Provide routing information to owners, contractors, and others on building laws and regulations.
- Graduation from high school.
- Two (2) years of experience in inspecting or supervising building construction, preparing and/or reading and applying building plans and specifications.
- Possession of a valid State of Hawaiʻi driver's license (Class
3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing.
All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.
Knowledge ofStandard practices, methods, materials, and tools used in building construction, including empirical formulae of structural stability and safety standards.
Ability toLearn requirements of building and zoning codes and ordinances for various types of buildings and structures and render decisions in conformity with codes and ordinances; recognize hazardous situations and determine means of correction; read and interpret plans and specifications, building and zoning codes and apply them to specific cases; deal tactfully and effectively with interested parties and the public; express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing;
prepare comprehensive and accurate narrative reports.
