Position: Kealakehe High: Grade 9-12 Alternative Learning Program Teacher, 600705 (2026-01736)

Description

Kealakehe High School is seeking a dedicated, empathetic, and innovative educator to join our Alternative Learning Program. This role is designed for a "Waverider" who is passionate about reaching students who may struggle in a traditional classroom setting and is committed to helping them find their unique path to graduation and personal success. As an ALP Teacher, you will create a supportive, non‑traditional learning environment that emphasizes individualized instruction, social‑emotional growth, and credit recovery.

You will act as both an educator and a mentor, bridging the gap between academic requirements and the diverse lived experiences of our students.

Minimum Qualifications

The Hawaii State Department of Education requires a Bachelor's Degree for teacher, librarian, or counselor positions, except in designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) roles. If hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license and must enroll in an approved program aligned with your teaching line. Upon hire, you must hold a valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit.

You must demonstrate active pursuit of Hawaii licensing requirements each year of employment.

Benefits

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.

  • Compensation: 10‑month teachers shall be compensated per the applicable Bargaining Unit 05 10‑month salary schedule.
  • 18 days of paid sick leave and state/federal holidays (6 can be used for personal or professional development).
  • Health insurance:
    State shares part of premiums for State‑sponsored Medical, Drug, Vision, and Adult Dental plans.
  • Group life insurance: free life insurance policy for employees and retirees.
  • Premium conversion plan: eligible employees may increase take‑home pay by having state deduct health care premiums before payroll taxes withheld.
  • Flexible spending accounts: eligible employees can reduce federal and state income taxes and social security taxes through a tax‑savings benefit program.
  • Retirement plan:
    State contributes to a retirement plan; eligibility criteria per credit service and age provided.
  • Tax shelter annuity: eligible employees may participate in a pre‑tax annuity program.
  • Deferred compensation: tax‑deferred investment program with multiple options.
  • Temporary disability insurance: benefits for disability caused by non‑work related injury or illness.
  • Social Security: state contributions to employee’s Social Security account.
  • Workers’ compensation: benefits covering medical expenses and partial wage support for injuries on the job.
  • Union & collective bargaining: 10‑month teachers represented by Hawaii State Teachers Association.
