The Fabrication Specialist supports PMDP's Sea Grant Innovation Grant initiatives and broader marine operations under the direction of the Marine Operations Manager. This role focuses on the design, fabrication, modification, and maintenance of field equipment, tools, and operational systems used in marine debris removal and related field missions.
The Fabrication Specialist plays a hands-on role in building and adapting mission-critical gear, supporting field deployments, and ensuring equipment readiness across vessels, shore-based operations, and remote field environments. Working closely with the Marine Operations Manager, this position bridges innovation, engineering, and field implementation to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and effectiveness.
Core Responsibilities
Fabrication and Systems Development
Design, fabricate, and modify tools, gear, and systems used in marine debris removal and field operations
Support prototyping and iterative development of new operational technologies and equipment
Assist in translating operational needs into functional, field-ready solutions
Maintain and improve fabrication workflows, materials, and build standards
Field and Marine Operations Support
Support deployment, setup, and breakdown of fabricated systems during field operations
Assist with small boat, shoreline, and dive-related operations as needed
Work under the direction of the Marine Operations Manager during field activities
Ensure equipment is mission-ready, properly maintained, and safely deployed
Equipment and Logistics
Assist in management, maintenance, and repair of operational equipment and tools
Support logistics related to fabrication materials, shipping, and equipment transport
Track inventory of tools, parts, and field systems
Innovation Grant Implementation (Sea Grant Focus)
Support execution of Sea Grant Innovation Grant objectives through applied fabrication work
Contribute to testing and refinement of new marine debris removal technologies
Document builds, modifications, and performance outcome of systems developed under the grant
Safety and Operational Compliance
Follow established safety protocols for fabrication shop, vessel, and field environments
Support compliance with operational and regulatory requirements during fabrication and field operations
Contribute to continuous improvement of safety practices and equipment standards
Additional Contributions
Support training and onboarding related to equipment use and field systems
Contribute to documentation of fabrication process and operational procedures
Assist Marine Operations Manager with evolving operational needs and special projects
Participate in mission debriefs and contribute recommendations for equipment and systems improvements
