Transportation Security Officer: Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

Job Description

The Transportation Security Officer (TSO) is responsible for securing and protecting air travelers, airports, and aircraft in a courteous and professional manner. The position is located with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the Department of Homeland Security.

The TSA offers a sign‑on bonus of up to $5,000, paid in two installments during the first 12 months of service.

• Operate screening equipment and technology to detect dangerous objects in baggage, cargo, and passengers.
• Perform searches and screening, including pat‑downs and bag searches, handling bags up to 50 lb.
• Control terminal entry and exit points.
• Interact with the public, giving directions and responding to inquiries.
• Maintain focus and awareness in a stressful environment, making effective decisions in crisis and routine situations.
• Develop critical thinking skills, applying risk‑based security screening protocols as required.
• Retain and implement knowledge of all applicable Standard Operating Procedures, demonstrating responsible behavior and adapting to change.

High school or GED.

• Must possess U.S. citizenship or be a U.S. national.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Selective Service registration required.
• Must pass a structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation.
• Subject to post‑employment random drug and/or alcohol testing.
• Must be available for various shifts, overtime, and travel for training.
• Must be proficient in English.
• Mandatory travel for training and occasional travel may be required.
• Exposure to lethal devices and dangerous chemicals is inherent.
