Assistant Plumbing Inspector, SR-16

Inspects and tests plumbing, gas, and sewer line installations and equipment in buildings and structures of limited size and scope for compliance with plans and specifications, plumbing code and other pertinent ordinances, and accepted safety and health standards, and performs other related duties as required. There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Public Works - Building Division in Kailua-Kona.

This Assistant Plumbing Inspector, SR-16, position is a career ladder position. The next level in the series is Plumbing Inspector, SR-19, $4,933/month. Persons hired into career ladder positions must meet minimum qualifications for the next level in the career ladder series, perform work at the higher level, and meet performance requirements to move to the next level in the career ladder series.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of duties include receiving and reviewing applications for plumbing and gas permits, checking and verifying information recorded on applications with related building permits on file, reviewing plumbing and gas installation plans to determine their compatibility with code requirements, inspecting plumbing and gas installations in existing or new residential and small commercial and industrial buildings, inspecting installations and equipment including sanitary plumbing systems, domestic water systems, lawn sprinkler systems, water heaters, gas piping, cesspools, and septic tanks, inspecting the installations of sewer lines, wet and dry standpipes, and fire sprinkler systems, checking for detective materials and for size and type of pipes and fittings, checking for grade and alignment, checking installations of gas and hot water systems for quality, capacity of tanks, pressure and leakage, issuing notices of violations of codes and ordinances, following up on violation notices to see that corrections are made, inspecting plumbing and gas installations and equipment in existing buildings, providing information to plumbing contractors, owners, and others on plumbing code and regulations, keeping work records and preparing reports on inspections, inputting and checking permit status updates in the permitting software system and/or other applications, assisting in inspecting plumbing and gas installations and equipment in large or multi-storied buildings, and performing other related duties as assigned.

Minimum qualification requirements include graduation from high school, and three (3) years of experience in inspecting or supervising plumbing installation work. License/certificate requirements include possession of a current State of Hawai'i Master Plumber or Journey level Plumber license at the time of filing (scan and attach a copy of your license to your application), and possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class
3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire).
