Position: Bilingual/Bicultural School/Home Assistant [Marshallese (Kosraean)] - West Hawaii District Annex

Bilingual/Bicultural School-Home Assistant

Salary Range: $3,606.00 per month (SR-11)

Responsibilities

Serve as liaison to promote cooperation and understanding among parents, school staff, and project personnel.

Assist in solving students' educational and related problems.

Disseminate project information.

Explain school programs, policies and procedures to parents; translate and convey parents' concerns to project and school staff.

Seek community resources, maintain a file of these resources and suggest them to parents.

Suggest parents and community members with special skills as resource persons in classrooms.

Encourage parents to participate in school activities.

Assist in organizing Parent Advisory Groups and encourage participation.

Assist in planning and developing projects to increase parent participation in school-related activities.

Plan and/or conduct information and interest sessions for parents.

Assist in translating information on various social and health programs.

Participate in training programs; prepare activity reports.

General Experience Requirements

Applicants must have at least two (2) years of paid or volunteer work experience with individuals and groups, and must possess the following skills:

Understand and explain materials related to the program/project/activity.

Establish and maintain rapport with individuals and groups and encourage participation.

Speak effectively with individuals and groups to elicit pertinent information.

Plan and conduct group information sessions.

Prepare activity reports.

Recognize and identify basic individual human needs.

Specialized Experience Requirement

Applicants must have at least one (1) year of experience providing knowledge and skills related to Marshallese (Koraean) culture and language:

Knowledge of Marshallese (Koraean) culture.

Ability to speak, read, write, and understand Marshallese (Koraean) language.

Ability to establish and maintain rapport with Marshallese (Koraean) communities.

License Requirement

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license to drive in the State of Hawaii.

Substitutions Allowed

Completion of a one-year Human Services Curriculum leading to a Certificate of Achievement at an accredited Community College with field experience may substitute for one year of general experience.

Completion of a two-year Human Services Curriculum leading to a degree at an accredited Community College with field experience may substitute for the general experience requirement.

Partial completion of a substantially full-time Human Services Curriculum at an accredited Community College including field experience may substitute for the general experience on a month-for-month basis.

Temporary Assignment Requirement

Claims of temporary assignment (TA) experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements must be verified with appropriate documentation.
