Overview
Hourly Graduate Writing Consultants at the Writing Center promote, uplift, support, and champion the diverse languages, literacies, and identities of writers within and beyond the university. They are part of a community of both undergraduate and graduate consultants and staff from across the university who collaborate with writers on a range of projects. They are also part of a Center committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
Hourly Graduate Writing Consultants report to the Writing Center’s Director and different members of the leadership team depending upon specific projects.
- Conduct one-on‑one writing consultations both in person and online and group consultations as needed
- Participate in ongoing and bi‑weekly professional development
- Lead requested “Introduction to the Writing Center” workshops
- Co‑consult and collaborate with consultants during consultations, especially during onboarding and observations
- Communicate regularly with colleagues over Slack and email
- Complete semesterly trainings, onboarding, and logistics orientations
Hourly graduate consultants also have the opportunity to do the following:
- Facilitate workshops for faculty across the curriculum
- Interface with campus partnerships
- Work with local communities through different community engagement projects
- Participate in a range of internal committees such as the Center’s Grant Writing Committee, Assessment Committee, or Linguistic Justice Committee
- Engage in research within the Writing Center individually or in teams
All hourly graduate writing consultants must be currently enrolled at MSU and complete onboarding in their first semester as a consultant by participating in the Writing Center’s Mentor Program.
Working ConditionsHourly graduate consultants typically work 5‑10 hours a week with at least 75% of that work taking place in person at one of the Writing Center’s locations across campus. Hours of consulting work are flexible and will depend upon the student’s schedule. Hours could take place from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. from Monday through Thursday, 9:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, and 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Consultants provide their own transportation to Writing Center locations.
Starting pay for hourly graduate consultants is $15.76. Commensurate with their experience, they are eligible for annual raises. They also have opportunities to get paid at higher rates with additional specialized training (leading workshops, special projects, coordinator roles). They may also apply for funding from the Writing Center in support of their research if it has connections to writing center work.
