Character Development Coach

Kalamazoo Central High School Supervisory/Technical – 192 Day Grade 9 ($33,696 - $38,865) This salary is for the  school year 10-month, Full-time

Scope of Responsibilities The Character Development Coach will support students assigned to Phoenix High School for character development, academic support, attendance intervention, and family communication. The Coach will provide support to students in order to help them to raise achievement levels, accept responsibility for their behavior, and improve their overall attendance through the assertive teamwork with students, parents, teachers, and community resources.

The Coach will use a constructive and a positive approach to improve student achievement, behavior, and attendance, and implement positive behavior strategies that will lead to academic success. The Character Development Coach will visit homes and help to improve home/school communication.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Assists building administrator and Character Development Leader with the implementation of positive behavior strategies.
  • Leads students in the conflict resolution and/or peer mediation process, helping them accept responsibility for their behavior so that it does not interfere with their academic performance.
  • Assists academic teams and building administrators with referrals to community agencies and acts as liaison with those agencies.
  • Maintains accurate and written records for all contacts with students, parents, school personnel, and community agencies.
  • Implements strategies to increase parent and guardian communication with and involvement in the support of their student's learning and improved behavior.
  • Implements the building's plan to support student behavior.
  • Implements and supervises student community service and employment programs.
  • Greets students as they enter the building in the morning.
  • Manages and monitors students entering and exiting the building during the course of the school day.
  • Oversees students' transportation to and from school.
  • Works with counselors and teachers to facilitate student's missed work due to illnesses, emergencies and suspensions.
  • Monitors students' attendance and provides strategies and resources to enhance and improve students' attendance.
  • Manages hall-way and cafeteria supervision and students hall-way activity.
  • Conducts daily walk-abouts in classrooms as a method of teaming with teachers to proactively and positively engage students.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Accredited Equivalency.
  • Successful experiences in helping students work through crisis issues that are interfering with their academic achievement.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of high school curriculum and is able to communicate with teachers, students, and parents regarding achievement in subject areas.
  • Evidence of successful post-secondary education.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with students, staff and families in diverse/multicultural settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify common student/family problems and recommend appropriate interventions.
  • Ability to advise/advocate for students and families.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • 3 years of successful work in an urban education setting at the high school level.
  • Proven records of working with children/students in crisis.
  • Ability to work with and network within the various Kalamazoo neighborhoods in order to address community, student, and family situations before they enter the school building.
  • Desirable Qualifications
  • Education or relative experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree.
  • Reside in the Kalamazoo community and has the ability to maneuver through the Kalamazoo neighborhoods.
  • Minimum three years of successful experience working with children and families in an urban educational setting and/or diverse/multicultural setting.
