Position: Polysomnographic Trainee (KAL)

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or a Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders by performing polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services, patient care and education.

Sleep Lab Procedures
  • Learns all sleep procedures and follows department policies and procedures.
  • Learns to accurately complete patient hook-up.
  • Learns to accurately identify sleep stages and all pertinent data.
  • Observes the measurement and placement of masks and determination of appropriate CPAP, BiPAP, and ASV.
  • Observes patient education.
Documentation/Patient Records
  • Accurately enters patient charges into current system.
  • Learns to document patient care data on appropriate flow sheets.
  • Helps obtain required pre and post questionnaires from patients.
  • Learns to make entries into logbook completely and accurately.
Equipment/Supplies
  • Learns to process reusable equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and department policy and procedure.
  • Learns to clean and disinfect BiPAP machines and cables in patient rooms after patient leaves in the morning.
  • Learns how to put clean linen in storage cabinets.
  • Learns the supply ordering system to ensure adequate supply stock.
  • Learns to dispose single patient use supplies.
Training And Education
  • Enrolls and completes defined AASM (American Association of Sleep Medicine) A-Step on-line courses in defined time frame.
  • Receives department instructor instruction and feedback.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
  • Completes other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
Organizational Responsibilities Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established time frames.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established time frames.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education And Experience

The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent. No previous experience is required. Prefer six months of related direct patient care experience or one-year post-secondary education. After completion of the AASM A-Step modules and training for a minimum 416 hours, trainee will be expected to sit for the

C.PSG.T (Certified Polysomnographic Technician) exam given by the BRPT (Board for Registered Polysomnographic Technicians). Successful passing of the

C.PSG.T exam is required within six months of obtaining position. Failure to pass the

C.PSG.T exam after two attempts (maximum allowed by the BPRT) may result in termination from this position. An extension of 3 months may be given if the initial exam attempt is failed. Staff must pass RPSGT within 3 years of achieving CPSGT certification.
