Director of Attorney Recruiting and Professional Development

We are accepting applicants for our Grand Rapids or Detroit office.

Responsibilities
  • Develop the department vision and multi-year strategy; align recruiting and professional development goals with Firm leadership priorities.
  • Establish and oversee departmental structure, staffing, and resource allocation to ensure efficiency and scalability.
  • Approve and monitor budgets for recruiting and professional development; evaluate ROI and cost-effectiveness of initiatives.
  • Represent the department in Firm leadership meetings, human resources strategy sessions, and committee discussions.
  • Collaborate with the Law Students Hiring & Recruiting Committee, Professional Development Committee, Practice Group Leadership, Chief Operating Officer, and Director of Human Resources to ensure seamless coordination between recruiting, integration, and development.
  • Supervise the Attorney Recruiting & Professional Development Manager and provide strategic mentorship.
  • Approve and maintain departmental SOPs, policies, and best practices.
Attorney Recruiting
  • Develop Firmwide attorney recruiting strategies, including lateral, entry-level, and student hiring priorities.
  • Partner with Practice Group Leaders and Firm leadership to identify hiring needs and align recruitment efforts with strategic growth.
  • Develop school targets, event strategies, and diversity-focused recruiting initiatives.
  • Oversee Firm participation in major campus and professional recruiting events.
  • Oversee and participate in interviews for member-level attorney candidates; collaborate with Firm leadership to ensure consistent evaluation standards, strategic alignment, and a positive candidate experience.
  • Develop the structure, budget, and evaluation process for the Summer Associate Program; participate in orientation, kickoff, and closing events.
  • Oversee recruiting brand messaging in collaboration with Communication & Brand, ensuring alignment with Firm culture and values.
Integration, Retention & Attorney Lifecycle
  • Develop attorney onboarding and integration frameworks to support smooth transitions and long-term engagement.
  • Partner with Human Resources and Practice Group Leaders to monitor attorney satisfaction, engagement, and retention data.
  • Develop firmwide integration standards and ensure consistency across offices and practice areas.
  • Oversee mentorship program vision, goals, and metrics, present updates to the Mentorship Committee and Firm leadership.
  • Collaborate with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and the Human Resources team to ensure inclusive and equitable approaches to recruiting, mentorship, and professional development.
Professional Development & Training Oversight
  • Set Firmwide professional development strategy, including attorney competency frameworks, core curriculum, and long-term learning goals.
  • Develop the annual professional development calendar in partnership with Practice Group Leaders and the Professional Development Committee.
  • Identify Firmwide and practice-specific training needs; develop annual training plans that align with attorney growth objectives.
  • Ensure all internal and external training programs meet CLE credit requirements where applicable.
  • Develop the design, delivery, and evaluation of major professional development initiatives (e.g., Hillman Advocacy, leadership development, and mentorship programs).
  • Ownership of attorney evaluation frameworks, timing, and alignment with Firm competencies.
  • Partner with Human Resources to ensure consistency in feedback structures, performance reviews, and developmental pathways.
  • Partner with internal and external presenters, vendors, and bar associations to deliver high-quality professional education.
CLE & Compliance Leadership
  • Oversee firmwide CLE policy and compliance strategy; ensure alignment with state bar requirements across jurisdictions.
  • Develop internal CLE processes and ensure accurate tracking and reporting of attorney credits.
