Description:

This step down unit cares for general medical and oncology stepdown patients.

The role involves administering chemotherapy via IV and starting IVs.

Familiarity with equipment such as vital sign towers, IV pumps, and documentation systems is necessary.

The nurse to patient ratio is typically 1:4-6.

Support staff is available if patient ratios fluctuate.

Charge RN responsibilities are generally not included in the patient assignment.

Chemotherapy admissions may decrease assignment ratios.

Weekend shifts are scheduled by management, with every other weekend required.

Flexibility in scheduling is possible with requests considered.

Must be available during the first two weeks of the assignment.

Requests for time off after the offer will require discussion with the management.

Daily patient demographics include adults and geriatrics, with a daily census averaging around 29 patients.

Coordination with interdisciplinary support services is essential.

Common patient diagnoses treated in this unit include sepsis, renal failure, respiratory failure, cancer, heart failure, and diabetes.

The unit also handles special procedures such as chemotherapy administration.

Additional equipment used includes BiPAP and CPAP devices.
