Description

Under general supervision and in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization, the registered nurse manages the care delivery for patients in the NICU and achieves quality outcomes and timely discharge. Responsibilities include using the nursing process (assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation, and evaluation); coordinating care with other professionals; delegating acts; providing selected aspects of physical care; and documenting and communicating during each tour of duty the patient’s response to care, consumption of resources and anticipated needs.

Responsibilities
  • Collect comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s health or situation.
  • Assess the patient’s physical and developmental needs.
  • Analyze assessment data to identify appropriate patient needs.
  • Document nursing history and age‑appropriate physical/emotional needs/strengths for assigned patients.
  • Review vital signs to assess condition of patient and detect deviations from normal.
  • Determine patient problems or issues using assessment data.
  • Confirm problems with patient and family when appropriate.
  • Document expected outcomes and plan of care related to the problems.
  • Identify expected outcomes for an individualized patient plan of care.
  • Use patient/family input when defining outcomes; incorporate patient values, ethical and cultural considerations.
  • Coordinate discharge planning for outcomes not achieved.
  • Develop a plan that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Incorporate clinical pathways and individualized interventions with patient input.
  • Consider data from other members of the healthcare team when developing the plan of care.
  • Implement the identified plan: administer prescribed medication and treatment, utilize evidence‑based interventions, maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs, initiate a patient education plan, manage the care plan for patients, and delegate interventions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan and the patient response to achieve expected outcomes; document the patient response.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities; use the results to initiate changes in nursing practice.
  • Participate in ongoing educational activities related to appropriate knowledge and professional issues; maintain professional records of competency.
  • Engage in self‑evaluation, identify strengths and areas for professional development; participate in systematic peer review.
  • Share knowledge and skills with peers and colleagues; contribute to a supportive and healthy work environment.
  • Collaborate with patient, family, and others to effect change and generate positive outcomes based on the plan of care.
  • Integrate ethical provisions: deliver care preserving patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality and rights; demonstrate commitment to relationship‑centered caring; act as a patient advocate.
  • Integrate research findings into practice: use research to improve patient health and the practice environment; participate in research activities appropriate to education level.
  • Consider safety, effectiveness, cost and impact in planning and delivery of nursing services: assign or delegate tasks based on patient needs and complexity, assist patients and families in becoming informed consumers.
  • Provide leadership in the professional practice setting and profession: participate in nursing councils, hospital and unit based committees; attend at least 50% of unit staff meetings; create and maintain a professional, healthy work environment.
Additional Responsibilities

Scrub RN duties include interpreting procedure cards, assessing case carts, identifying missing supplies, anticipating physician needs, observing patient condition changes, coordinating case information, discouraging improper equipment use, acting as a specialist for circulators, managing after‑hour calls, and performing scrub duties in multiple services. For HDU departments additional on‑call requirements exist.
