Job Description
The purpose of this position is to assist land management staff in the field with various forest management duties in a learning capacity. Work activities may include assisting land management staff with timber sale preparation, timber survey and marking, permit, contract, or plan reviews, review of land use permits, and conducting regeneration and forest health surveys.

DNR Forest Resources Forestry Student Experience Program About the programJoin the DNR’s Forest Resources Division for a paid student position working directly in the field with natural resource professionals. The Forest Resources Student Experience Program will prepare students for rewarding careers in natural resources management, public service, and future leadership.
Students will learn and apply skills in a hands‑on setting, contributing to the responsible management of Michigan’s state forests and the health of our state’s public and private lands.
Position responsibilities are tailored to each student and could involve:- Timber sale preparation, surveys and marking
- Permit, contract, or management plan reviews
- Assisting with forest regeneration surveys
- Assisting with forest health surveys
- Working with GIS data to support land management
This application process is for Summer 2026.
We are filling positions in the Eastern Upper Peninsula, Western Upper Peninsula, Eastern Lower Peninsula, Western Lower Peninsula and Southern Lower Peninsula.
Required Education And Experience EducationCurrent enrollment in high school, vocational or technical school, or post‑secondary educational institution.
ExperienceNo specific type or amount is required.
