Stormwater Division
Apprentice level work involving the maintenance and construction of the water distribution system and stormwater collection system, and performing related tasks as needed. Operates one or more types of automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks.
- Works with Public Services staff to learn operations such as the water distribution system and stormwater collections system; operation and maintenance procedures; and Public Works operation and maintenance.
- Performs manual labor relating to hydrants and other water system connections.
- Reads maps and makes emergency system shutdowns.
- Operates trucks in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel, and supplies.
- Operates trucks to carry tools, equipment, parts, and materials/supplies to and from a job site.
- Performs minor repairs on vehicle equipment; repairs storm sewers, water lines, and mains; operates a road compactor and various other pieces of equipment.
- Maintains streets, traffic signs, structures, and storm sewers, cemetery, water mains, and performs manual labor operations.
- Reads water meters on an assigned route and records readings.
- Checks to ensure meters are functioning properly.
- Uses handheld computers and prepares simple work reports.
- Performs snow removal and street sweeping operations.
- Has some knowledge of municipality construction and maintenance principles.
- Has some knowledge of traffic laws and regulations.
- May make minor equipment repairs.
- Has some knowledge of the Public Services Department activities.
- Must be able to lift, push, and pull 90 pounds periodically.
- Must have good oral and written communication skills.
- Must pass all internal and practical examinations concerning numerous equipment.
- Must pass AASHTO equipment maintenance, proper snow plowing techniques, and de‑icing training.
- Can establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public.
- Possesses a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and a certified driver’s license CDL "B" endorsement with air brakes within 6 months.
- Must obtain an ACI Flatwork Finisher Certification during the Apprenticeship.
- Must obtain all required training within three years of starting the program to maintain employment.
- Completion of a high school diploma or GED.
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
