Vehicle Mechanic I
Job DescriptionPerforms semiskilled and routine tasks as a helper to other vehicle and master mechanics; performs related work as required. Must advance to a Vehicle Mechanic II position with six State of Michigan certifications within two years of start date as a Vehicle Mechanic I. Shop is an open promotion environment and wages may be adjusted after completion of probation period based on skill level of person hired.
The work of this class is of a routine semiskilled nature involving responsibility for willing and efficient performance of assigned tasks. An employee in this class works under the supervision of the Shop Supervisor/Foreman who assigns work to be performed. A Vehicle Mechanic I is considered to be an entry level position in training for a higher Vehicle Mechanic classification through open promotion and is expected to perform tasks of progressively increasing difficulty.
The work is carefully checked in process and upon completion.
- Serves as a helper to other Mechanics of a higher classification and works independently as required.
- Performs servicing of cars, trucks, and equipment; changes tires, checks and changes batteries and lamps.
- Performs minor tune-up work; under direction, may disassemble and reassemble engines, clutches, transmissions, and differentials.
- Assists in the removal and installation of other components as required.
- Some familiarity with common terminology, practices, processes, materials, and tools of the vehicle mechanic trade; good mechanical aptitude; interest in and willingness to learn along with being in good physical condition.
- Position will require the use of torches, welders, heavy lifting, bending and stooping while working in a sometimes dirty, hot and noisy environment.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a routine basis and up to 90 pounds on an intermittent basis.
- Some automotive and personal computer skills will be necessary.
- Completion of high school or trade school, including reading comprehension and writing ability.
- Some experience as a helper or skilled Vehicle Mechanic, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Additional requirements:
- Applicants with Michigan mechanic licenses and a Michigan Commercial Drivers license (CDL) "A" with air brake and tanker endorsement (N) are preferred and will be given first consideration.
- Must have own set of mechanic's hand tools (minimum quality craftsman – all inclusive up through 1 – 1/8").
- State or Emergency Vehicle Technician certification(s) preferred.
- Must advance to the Vehicle Mechanic II position within two years of start date as a Vehicle Mechanic I.
