Note:

Continuation of employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funding.

Purpose:

The School Social Worker will conduct needs assessments and advocate for policies, programs, and services to meet educational and mental health needs of all students, and to support safe school climates conducive to learning.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Michigan Limited Licensed Master Social Worker (LLMSW) or Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) credential, or eligibility to obtain licensure.
  • Valid Michigan School Social Worker Certificate or approval issued by the Michigan Department of Education, preferred.
  • Experience providing school-based social work services in a K-12 setting.

Skills/

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of theoretical foundations and history of the school social work profession and service delivery
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards necessary for social work practice in school settings
  • Knowledge of organizational components and structural dynamics of public-school agencies at local, state, and national levels, as well as identification of methods useful to analyze and influence these in order to maximize student success
  • Ability to verbally communicate in terms understandable to students, parents, school staff, and agencies
  • Awareness of curriculum, teaching theories, and methodologies
  • Experience conducting special education evaluations and providing services within the IEP process.
  • Knowledge of IDEA, MARSE, Section 504, and Medicaid School-Based Services.

Responsibilities:

Student Support Services

  • Provide individual and small-group social-emotional support services.
  • Conduct student needs assessments and develop intervention plans.
  • Assist students in developing coping, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and self-regulation skills.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support during student emergencies.
  • Participate in threat assessment, suicide risk assessment, and crisis response teams as assigned.

Attendance and Engagement

  • Monitor and support students with chronic absenteeism and truancy concerns.
  • Collaborate with families to identify and address barriers to regular school attendance.
  • Conduct home visits as appropriate.
  • Develop attendance intervention plans and coordinate community resources.

Family and Community Collaboration

  • Serve as a liaison between home, school, and community agencies.
  • Connect students and families with mental health, housing, medical, food, and other community resources.
  • Facilitate communication between families and school staff.
  • Provide parent support and education related to student success.

MTSS and Behavioral Supports

  • Participate in MTSS and student support team meetings.
  • Consult with teachers and administrators regarding student behavioral, social, and emotional needs.
  • Support implementation of behavioral intervention plans and restorative practices.
  • Assist with school-wide social-emotional learning initiatives

Compliance and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of services provided.
  • Protect student confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and professional standards.
  • Participate in professional learning and maintain required licensure.
