OverviewThe Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting two Civil Engineering Specialists in Kalispell. The position is responsible for conducting in-depth engineering and analysis, administering contracts, overseeing projects, and project design. The incumbent may serve as a lead worker and determines the best solution based on established engineering guidelines. Completed work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment. The position reports to the Engineering Project Manager and is part of a career ladder with advancement opportunities.
Responsibilities- Conduct in-depth engineering analysis and solution design for assigned projects.
- Administer contracts and monitor project execution.
- Oversee project activities and provide technical leadership as needed.
- Ensure compliance with engineering standards, federal guidelines, and MDT policies.
All levels require a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a closely related field. Related degrees may include Environmental Engineering, Geologic/Geotechnical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Science.
Entry Level – Level 1- Prior work experience is not required for entry level.
- Minimum 6 months to 2 years of engineering or directly related work experience.
- Minimum 2 to 4 years of engineering or directly related work experience.
- Proof of passage of the Fundamental Engineering Exam (FE).
- For Level 3, additionally requires FE, Engineering Intern Certification (EIT), or licensed Professional Engineer.
- Develops sufficient engineering knowledge, skill and judgment in a specific practice area to perform routine engineering tasks within the assigned area. This knowledge and competence should reasonably transfer to other work areas at the same level.
- Broad knowledge of engineering practices and principles, construction methods, processes, computer‑assisted drafting and design software, and engineering techniques are required for moderate‑complexity projects.
- Journey level knowledge of federal guidelines and procedures regarding road design and construction is also required.
- Possesses effective oral and written communication skills for client, customer, or official contacts and communications pertaining to specific assignment or meetings.

$32.04 – $38.36 hourly.
