Overview: The Civil Engineering Specialist in Kalispell is responsible for conducting in-depth engineering and analysis, administering contracts, overseeing projects, and project design and may serve as a lead worker. The incumbent determines the best solution based on established engineering guidelines, knowledge, and skills. Finished work is reviewed for sound professional judgment. The position reports to the Engineering Project Manager and is part of a career ladder with advancement opportunities.
Responsibilities- Conduct thorough engineering analysis and design for road and bridge projects.
- Administer contracts and oversee project execution.
- Lead engineering teams when required.
- Develop solutions using established guidelines and best practices.
- Prepare and review engineering documentation.

Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a closely related field (including Environmental Engineering, Geologic/Geotechnical Engineering, Materials Engineer, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Science).
- Entry Level – Civil Engineering Specialist level 1: prior work experience not required.
- Mid Level – Civil Engineering Specialist level 2: minimum 6 months to 2 years of engineering or directly related work experience.
- Top Level – Civil Engineering Specialist level 3: minimum 2 to 4 years of engineering or directly related work experience.
- Proof of passage of the Fundamental Engineering Exam (FE).
- Mid and Top Level: Evidence of Engineering Intern Certification (EIT) or licensed Professional Engineer in addition to FE.
- Develops sufficient engineering knowledge, skill, and judgment in a specific practice area to perform routine engineering tasks.
- Broad knowledge of engineering practices, construction methods, and design software for projects of moderate complexity, including federal guidelines for road design and construction.
- Possesses effective oral and written communication skills for client and official interactions.
Driver’s record will be verified. Successful applicants will be required to sign a release form authorizing the Department to obtain the applicant’s permanent driving records. Compliance with Montana administrative regulations and MDT policy is a condition of employment.

Salary and Compensation$32.04 – $38.36 per hour.
