Overview
Field Project Technician positions with the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) in Kalispell support inspection, sampling, and testing to verify construction features and materials meet standard specifications, department requirements, and contract agreements. The role may include staking and surveying work and other duties as assigned. This position reports to the Engineering Project Manager and is part of a career ladder with advancement opportunities.
Responsibilities- Coordinate and conduct inspection, sampling, and testing procedures to verify compliance with specifications and contract requirements.
- Coordinate staking and surveying activities as part of project execution.
- Assist in documenting field observations, data collection, and reporting to project management.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.
Education and Experience
All levels require a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma, including coursework in algebra, geometry, or trigonometry.
- L1 – Position requires no engineering technician related experience.
- L2 – Position requires one year of engineering technician related experience.
- Field Project Technician III – $27.09:
Position requires two years of experience in highway construction or a related field (e.g., laboratory testing, transportation design, engineering). - Junior Engineering Coordinator – $31.49:
Position requires three years of experience in highway construction or a related field.
Alternative qualifications include any combination of additional related work experience and education equivalent to the minimum qualifications, including a four-year Civil Engineer or Civil Engineering Technician degree (C.E.T.).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of project inspection and testing procedures, site features and materials, construction engineering principles, sampling and laboratory testing procedures, and relevant standards and specifications (AASHTO, FHWA, ASTM).
- Knowledge of surveying and highway construction methods, documentation techniques, design and construction criteria, material properties, and site-specific factors (soils, temperature, weather, gradations, stability, etc.).
- Skill in reviewing and applying design plans, acquiring field data, creating field notes, interpreting site conditions, and communicating with contractors, landowners, and MDT staff.
- Skill in operating specialized sampling and testing equipment and standard office equipment used to calculate and record data.
- Driver’s record will be verified; applicants may be asked to sign a release to obtain driving records. Compliance with State Vehicle Use policies is a condition of employment.
