Position Purpose
Citxw Nlaka'pamux Assembly (CNA) was created in 2013 as a powerful and unifying voice for eight Nlaka’pamux Bands regarding the Teck Highland Valley Copper Mine. It is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the eight Participating Bands. Headquartered in Merritt, BC, with a workforce of over 40, CNA provides training and job readiness along with cultural, social, and technical programming to the over 3035 members of the eight Participating Bands.
CNA is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented nłeʔképmx Data Management Specialist to support the collection, management, protection, and organization of culturally sensitive traditional use and Indigenous knowledge information. This role will work closely with community members, leadership, knowledge holders, and project teams to ensure traditional use data is handled respectfully, securely, and in accordance with community protocols and data governance principles.
Primary Duties
Conduct and support Traditional Use Studies and related research initiatives,
Interview community members, Elders, Knowledge Holders, and land users in a respectful, culturally appropriate, and confidential manner,
Collect, organize, digitize, analyze, and maintain Traditional Use, land use, and cultural knowledge data,
Manage sensitive and confidential cultural information in accordance with community protocols, data governance standards, and organizational requirements,
Maintain secure databases, records management systems, GIS files, maps, transcripts, and related project documentation,
Prepare and support technical reports, summaries, mapping outputs, regulatory documentation, and community‑facing materials,
Coordinate interviews, meetings, fieldwork activities, and project logistics in support of Traditional Use initiatives,
Ensure data quality, integrity, accuracy, and consistency across projects and information systems,
Support the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and best practices related to Indigenous data stewardship and information management,
Work collaboratively with internal departments, consultants, technical specialists, and community representatives to support project objectives,
Participate in community engagement sessions, field visits, and project meetings as required, and
Other ad‑hoc duties as assigned by the Operations Manager or delegate.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Traditional Use studies, Indigenous knowledge research, and community-based information gathering practices,
Understanding of confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, and the respectful management of sensitive cultural and community information,
Knowledge of Indigenous data sovereignty principles and cultural data stewardship practices is considered an asset,
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, accuracy, and data integrity,
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to engage respectfully with community members, Elders, and Knowledge Holders,
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain respectful working relationships,
Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and collaborate effectively within a team environment,
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience working with databases, digital filing systems, and/or GIS mapping software is considered an asset.
Experience and Requirements
1–3 years of experience in Traditional Use studies, Indigenous knowledge research, community-based research, data management, records management, or a related field,
Experience interviewing community members and working respectfully with Indigenous communities,
Diploma or degree in Indigenous Studies, Anthropology, Geography, Information Management, Environmental Studies, or a related field is considered an asset,
