Position: General Labourer / Light Equipment Operator

GENERAL LABOURER / LIGHT EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

Overview

The General Labourer / Light Equipment Operator supports the Public Works Department by providing a high level of service to the community through diverse maintenance, repair, and construction activities.

Responsibilities
  • Support day‑to‑day operations across the Public Works Department, including:
    • Public Works Yard & Shop
    • Waste Water Distribution
    • Heavy Equipment Operations
    • Water Distribution / Seasonal Irrigation
    • Fleet Maintenance
    • Solid Waste Management
    • Landscaping (Community/CLC)
    • TteS Asset Management Programs
    • TteS Facilities
    • Construction Crews
    • Dam Operations
    • Community Events / Funerals
    • St Joseph Church & Graveyard
    • Emergency Response & Recovery
  • Perform road, park, sporting field, trail, green space, playground, urban forestry, cemetery, and lawn maintenance (20%).
    • Operate power mowers, tractors, power trimmers, sod cutters.
    • Operate small lawn tractors, rototillers, landscaping tools.
    • Maintain roads, boulevards, signs, weeds.
    • Mow grass, rake, fertilize, water lawns, prune shrubs and trees.
    • C​lean grounds, pick up garbage.
    • Assist with water line maintenance, irrigation repairs, and sprinkler installations.
    • Clean sprinkler valves, winterize irrigation systems.
  • Assist with equipment operation and maintenance.
    • Drive a half‑ton pickup truck as needed.
    • Operate light and medium duty vehicles and equipment.
    • Load/unload materials and supplies.
    • Assist in light mechanical repairs.
  • Support water distribution & wastewater collection systems, including inspection and repair of water mains, metering, hydrants, and control valves.
  • Operate seasonal irrigation systems and ARDA Raw Water System.
  • Assist St Joseph Church & Graveyard caretaker with maintenance and cemetery upkeep.
  • Perform snow removal duties (operations, shovels, plowing, sanding).
  • Assist skilled workers and perform backfill public works tasks.
  • Other duties as needed (10%).
Equipment
  • Tractor, skid steer, plate tamper, jumping jack, roller packer, snowplow.
  • Power mowers, tractors, power trimmers, sod cutters.
  • Small lawn tractors, rototillers, landscaping tools, cleaning equipment.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence;
    Class 1 with Air Brakes Endorsement an asset.
  • WCB Work Safe Training preferred.
  • Valid Standard First Aid ticket, Level 1 preferred.
  • WHIMIS Training / Certificate preferred.
Preferred Experience
  • Municipal operations, construction, or maintenance work experience.
  • Knowledge of roads, water & wastewater utilities.
  • Ability to read construction plans, specifications, drawings.
  • Knowledge of parks, grounds maintenance, sprinkler system installation.

Hours & Pay

Normal day shift: 7 hours. Non‑normal shifts may be required.

Pay: $22.59 – $33.22 per hour, depending on education and experience.
