Purpose of the Position

The Diesel Mechanic Apprentice performs the completion of preventative and scheduled maintenance on locomotives in a fast‑paced, safety‑focused environment. Working alongside qualified mechanics, the apprentice will complete inspections, repairs, and servicing while developing core technical skills related to diesel engines and mechanical systems.

This role is ideal for individuals who are mechanically inclined, eager to learn, and committed to working safely and efficiently. All work must be performed in accordance with company policies, safety procedures, and applicable regulatory standards.

This position offers a $10,000 signing bonus for qualified candidates.

Position Accountabilities
  • Maintain, inspect, service, test and repair all systems on locomotives, mobile equipment, and vehicles used in plant, yard, and road service.
  • Diagnose diesel engine malfunctions and make repairs within regulatory and company guidelines.
  • Complete work in accordance with blueprints, schematic drawings, and service manuals.
  • Evaluate parts for reuse, repair, or replacement.
  • Modify and construct mechanical assemblies.
  • Maintain low‑voltage repairs on locomotive electrical systems.
  • Service locomotive cabs, including cleaning cab walls, toilets, windows, and floors.
  • Operate equipment such as overhead or mobile cranes, forklifts, and hand tools.
Position Requirements
  • High school diploma or general equivalency.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working as a mechanic, preferably on diesel engines.
  • Availability to work all types of shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to pass required written examinations and understand safety instructions, rules, regulations, and other written or printed material in English.
  • Validated dedication to safety and ability to complete work within guidelines and rules.
  • Strong communication skills (provide clear and concise instructions and directions).

Pre‑Employment Requirements
  • Medical and drug testing: a successful pre‑employment medical assessment, including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company drug test, is required.
  • Background investigation, including criminal history check, education verification, and driver’s license verification and driving history.
