JOB DESCRIPTION:

TRANSPORTATION – CERTIFIED MECHANIC

Merritt School Board Office SUMMARY

Reports to Operations Manager, provides mechanical services, maintains and repairs buses, vehicles and grounds equipment.

• Position – Certified Mechanic
• Start Date – As soon as possible
• Employment – Full-time, continuing position (37.5hrs/week) (12 months per year)
• Hours – Monday to Friday (7:00am to 3:00pm)
• Salary - $42.75, plus extended medical benefits, vacation entitlement and pension plan.

• Schedules and maintains and repairs all buses, vehicles, and grounds equipment.
• Communicates with bus drivers regarding bus repairs and maintenance.
• Maintains accurate records.
• Maintains preventive maintenance program according to Ministry of Transportation requirements.
• Inspects and makes recommendations for the purchase or disposal of District vehicles and equipment.
• Orders parts, equipment, tools and supplies.
• Road test vehicles.
• Operates tools and equipment of the trade.
• Responds to emergency situations as requested.
• Preforms other assigned comparable duties which are within the scope of knowledge, skills and abilities required by this class specification.

• Completion of Grade 12.
• Valid Class 2, B.C. Driver's License with Air Brakes endorsement or the ability to obtain.
• Must have Interprovincial Heavy-Duty Technician Trade Certification.
• Must have a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certification.
• Ability to perform a variety of skilled tasks in the maintenance of district vehicles and equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively using courtesy and tact in the explanation and exchange of information.
• Ability to determine, judge and select appropriate course of action within limits of established methods and procedures.
• Physical ability to preform the required duties; able to carry, lift, push and pull awkward or large heavy objects up to 50lbs. or more.
• Flexible and adaptable to varied working conditions. Able to work with minimum supervision, alone and in a team environment.
• Self-motivated.
• Basic computer skills and ability to use email, electronic work order system and online submission of CVIP reports.
• Knowledge and able to use and understand computerized diagnostic equipment.
• Acceptable Driver's abstract.
• Minimum of four years (5) of experience as mechanic with specific background in school buses, medium and heavy-duty trucks.
• Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certificate and familiarity with Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) safety procedures.
