Teacher Assistant/ Paraprofessional
Job Summary
Acts as an integral part of the instructional team to enhance student learning and discipline. Supports Kumu by supervising students, coordinating classroom and school-wide activities, providing direct instructional support, preparing materials, administering standardized tests, and substituting during emergency teacher absences. This is a 2‑Year Defined Term position with a 10‑month work year. The role offers the possibility of extension or conversion to a full‑time regular position and is eligible for KS Benefits.
EssentialResponsibilities
- Supervise students during recess, before/after school, lunch, and teacher release time, ensuring safety and managing behavior.
- Assist in standardized test administration: preparation, proctoring and scheduling of students, classrooms, and materials.
- Serve as a substitute classroom teacher during emergency teacher absences.
- Organize and coordinate classroom, grade‑level, and school‑wide activities and events, managing materials, equipment and logistics.
- Provide direct instructional support to individual or small/large groups of students, including lesson preparation, tutoring, homework review, and class projects.
- Counsel students on study skills and self‑discipline, and consult with teachers and parents to identify needed support.
- Prepare and create instructional materials such as photocopies, laminations, workbooks, calendars, signs, and notices.
- Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma.
- Minimum of 3 years of related experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to supervise large numbers of students and monitor safety.
- Knowledge of K‑12 child development and behavior.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Good organizational skills and ability to manage tasks with minimal supervision.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing needs and hours.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to teach lesson plans as directed to individual or small/large groups.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with direct instruction or instructional support in a K‑12 classroom.
- Knowledge of K‑12 curriculum and instruction.
- Experience working with K‑12 students.
- Knowledge and sensitivity to Hawaiian culture.
- Frequently sits and performs desk‑based computer tasks.
- Occasionally stands, walks, writes by hand, and lifts or carries objects up to 15 pounds.
- Rarely twists, bends, stoops, kneels, or climbs.
Work is conducted in a classroom environment, with occasional work in non‑standard settings. The schedule is typically Monday through Friday, but evening and weekend hours may be required to meet goals and objectives.
Benefits and CompensationHourly compensation ranges from $27.19 to $36.49, based on experience and qualifications. Standard KS Benefits apply to Defined Term employees.
LocationPrimary location:
Hawaii Campus, Keaau, Hawaii (in‑state). Additional locations may be assigned.
