Pay Ranges

Drafting Technician III: $3,484 to $4,409/month (SR‑11, Step C to I)

Drafting Technician IV: $3,768 to $4,766/month (SR‑13, Step C to I)

Drafting Technician V: $4,078 to $5,157/month (SR‑15, Step C to I)

Responsibilities
  • Individually perform complex drafting work in a specialized area.
  • May serve as team leader for a small group of lower‑level drafting technicians.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Level‑Specific Duties
  • Level III: Work under general supervision as an advanced trainee on assignments of varying difficulty.
  • Level IV: Complete moderately difficult drafting assignments under general supervision and receive training in procedures, regulations, and special techniques.
  • Level V: Carry out fairly complex drafting work under general supervision in a specialized area and perform other related duties.
  • Level VI: Individually perform complex drafting work requiring high skill, lead a small team of lower‑level technicians, and perform other related duties.
Specialty Titles (V and above)
  • Drafting Technician (Engineering) – Draft profiles, cross‑sections, plans and details for airport, harbor, highway, water and sewage, flood control, irrigation, parks, and other engineering projects.
  • Drafting Technician (Architectural) – Draft floor plans, elevations, perspective drawings, sections, and architectural details of buildings and related structures.
  • Drafting Technician (Structural) – Draft work on girders, beams, columns, joints, concrete reinforcement and other elements of steel, concrete, timber and structures such as bridges, buildings, dams, wharves, piers, tunnels, retaining walls, tanks, towers and pedestrian facilities.
  • Drafting Technician (Cartographic) – Compile, draft, revise and edit maps and charts, and process source material for use in such maps and charts.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Legal Authorization to Work: Citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States; or otherwise eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • Education: High school graduation or equivalent, with courses in mathematics and mechanical drawing.
  • Drafting

    Experience:

    • Level III: 1 year of experience preparing detailed architectural, engineering, or cartographic drawings from designs and sketches, including layout of finished plans and calculation in scaled drawings.
    • Level IV: 2 years of experience, with proficiency in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, nomenclature, conventional symbols, drafting instruments, and basic math problem solving.
    • Level V: 3 years of experience, performing all but the most complex drafting work in a specialized area.
    • Level VI: 5 years of experience, with independent planning and execution of graphic portrayals that complement specifications or descriptions.
  • Substitution: Completion of an accredited community college Engineering Technology course may substitute one year of the required drafting experience.
  • Driver's License: Valid driver’s license at time of appointment.
