Position Summary

Under the general direction of more skilled technicians, the Tech Trainee 1 primarily performs helper duties for employees in the Service Department. The Tech Trainee 1 may at times perform unskilled or semi‑skilled duties in assigned areas. The Trainee 1 remains in the training classification for a minimum of 1 year, during which they attend all assigned training classes and obtain passing grades.

Functions
  • Disassemble, clean, and reassemble Caterpillar and allied product machines, as well as Ag & Turf and industrial products serviced by the Service Department.
  • Measure and identify parts and components for reusability or replacement, ordering new parts as required.
  • Perform all requirements found in Caterpillar and other allied lubrication, maintenance and warranty guidelines.
  • Attend training classes as directed and obtain passing grades.
  • Complete Service Reports in a timely manner and in accordance with HPC standards.
  • Travel as required within HPC established territory.
  • Operate HPC service vehicles.
  • Adhere strictly to HPC safety, housekeeping, credit, and other rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain a favorable business relationship with customers, suppliers, and personnel from other HPC departments.
  • Education, Experience, and Skills Required
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Must have PC skills.
  • Must be forklift certified or able to be certified within 60 days.
  • Must own hand tools suitable to perform the work noted above.
  • At least 1 year of experience preferred.
  • Physical Demands
  • Walking:
    Moves about on foot, often through uneven terrain.
  • Hands/arms:
    Operates equipment and hand and power tools.
  • Handling:
    Seizes, helps, or works with hands.
  • Lifting:
    Raises or lowers miscellaneous equipment parts and tools.
  • Reaching:
    Extends hands and arms in any direction.
  • Stooping:
    Bends body downward and forward by bending at knees or waist.
  • Standing:
    Remains in standing position if required to perform various functions of the job.
  • Climbing:
    In and out of equipment.
  • Raising/Lowering:
    Goes up and down in man lifts.
  • Vision:
    Reads work tickets and parts and service books and operates heavy equipment.
  • Talking:
    Communicates by radio, phone, and in person.
  • Hearing:
    Hears well enough to discern mechanical problems for safety in and around shop and construction sites and to receive communication by radio, phone, and in person.
  • Sitting:
    Sits in equipment and vehicles for extended periods.
  • Laying:
    Lies in prone position under vehicles and equipment for extended periods.
  • Lifting:
    Lifts up to 60 lbs. daily, frequent exertion.

    Works in conditions with constant or intermittent noise.
  • Temperature/Weather:
    Works outside and in shop with variations of temperature and weather.

    Subject to foul odors, fumes, and harsh substances.
