Overview
The Lab Assistant at Riverside Healthcare performs blood collection procedures, including venipuncture and capillary punctures, and processes laboratory specimens. This role supports the laboratory team, ensuring accurate and timely results and contributing to high‑quality patient care. The position includes rotating weekend and holiday shifts.
Responsibilities- Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients of all ages, ensuring proper identification, labeling, handling, and order of draw.
- Prepare, process, and transport laboratory specimens according to established protocols, and confirm special requirements for acceptability.
- Provide excellent patient care, maintain comfort and safety, and use AIDET in all interactions.
- Adhere to laboratory safety procedures, including PPE use, infection prevention, and biohazardous material handling.
- Accurately enter patient and specimen information into the laboratory information system (LIS).
- Monitor and restock phlebotomy and laboratory supplies.
- Collaborate with the laboratory team to prioritize specimen collection and processing.
- Assist with inspections and CAP compliance requirements.
- Perform general administrative tasks such as filing, answering phones, and managing patient paperwork.
- Provide training and guidance to new phlebotomy staff or students.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance workflow.
- Perform outreach collection at contracted facilities, such as nursing homes, and transport specimens to the laboratory.
- Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work under pressure, and maintain high accuracy.
- At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience, preferably in a healthcare or clinical setting.
- Experience in a hospital clinical laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and biohazard handling procedures.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast‑paced environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a phlebotomy training program.
- Phlebotomy certification or 2 years of phlebotomy experience.

Pay range: USD $18.83 – $23.00 per hour.
