Overview
Riverside Healthcare in Kankakee, Illinois, is seeking a skilled and compassionate Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) to join our acute care team. The candidate will provide exceptional patient care to expectant mothers and their newborns in a fast‑paced, supportive environment. The RN will work closely with obstetricians, pediatricians and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, positive childbirth experiences and manage routine and emergency deliveries.
EssentialDuties
- Provide comprehensive nursing care for women before, during and after labor including monitoring maternal/fetal vital signs, medication administration and assisting with epidurals.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Offer emotional support and education throughout the labor process.
- Monitor labor progression using fetal monitoring devices and respond promptly to abnormalities or emergencies.
- Assist in all aspects of labor; prepare patients, guide mothers, and coach during pushing.
- Assist physicians with vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections, ensuring sterile environments.
- Provide immediate newborn care, including resuscitation and APGAR scoring as needed.
- Provide postpartum care, administer medications, monitor recovery, and facilitate skin‑to‑skin contact and breastfeeding support.
- Educate patients and families about postpartum and newborn care and discharge instructions.
- Respond to obstetric emergencies such as preeclampsia, hemorrhage, and fetal distress with rapid, effective interventions.
- Participate in Code OB, Code Blue or other emergency protocols as required.
- Maintain annual education requirements.
- Participate in departmental meetings and continuing education opportunities.
- Assist with cleanliness and inventory in the labor and delivery unit.
- Provide mentorship to nursing students or newly hired RNs.
- Participate in departmental meetings and continuing education.

- Minimum of one year of experience as an RN in Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby, or Women’s Health.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- RN license in the state of Illinois.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months).
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months).
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months).
- New graduate RNs starting on or after 1/1/25 must earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing within 3 years of hire.
- BSN preferred.
- Base compensation within the pay range based on qualifications and experience.
