We are seeking a skilled Diesel Mechanic to join our team in Kankakee, IL. This position operates on a standard 1st shift schedule, Monday through Friday, with a competitive hourly rate ranging from $30 to $40.

Core Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive maintenance and light repairs on gasoline and diesel buses to ensure fleet reliability.
  • Identify mechanical issues and execute a structured preventive maintenance schedule to keep vehicles running smoothly.
  • Complete both major and minor overhauls for transmissions and engine components.
  • Maintain and repair essential systems including HVAC, air compressors, fuel delivery, ignition, braking, and wheelchair lifts.
  • Ensure vehicle climate control units are serviced and fully operational.
  • Conduct thorough school bus inspections to verify compliance with all DOT safety standards.
  • Document all labor hours and parts utilized during service tasks.
Professional Qualifications
  • Experience working with medium‑duty buses is required, with a preference for those familiar with International Truck or Bus platforms.
  • Candidates must provide their own personal toolset.
  • Familiarity with pupil transportation regulations, such as IDOT inspection codes, is necessary; a CDL Class B with air brake endorsement and A/C certification are highly desired.
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with all stakeholders.
  • Maintain a helpful and professional demeanor while managing tight deadlines and high‑pressure situations.
  • Demonstrate the self‑motivation required to complete assigned tasks independently and efficiently.
Physical Demands
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform core job duties in alignment with ADA, FMLA, and other regulatory standards regarding productivity.
  • Commit to consistent and reliable attendance as a fundamental requirement of this role.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively via telephone.
  • Possess the physical capacity to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
