Job Title:
Civil Superintendent
Job Description
This Civil Superintendent role oversees earthwork and site development projects across the Kansas City area, focusing on excavation, utilities, and groundwork packages for commercial construction. The position leads small field crews, coordinates closely with Project Managers and Estimators, and ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of sitework scopes on projects such as multifamily developments, hospitals, retail centers, and other commercial builds.
This is a hands-on leadership role offering strong exposure to diverse commercial projects and a clear path to grow into a lead or General Superintendent position as the company continues to expand.
Responsibilities
+ Manage day-to-day field operations for civil and sitework projects, ensuring work progresses safely and efficiently.
+ Oversee and lead field crews of approximately 3-5 employees, providing direction, guidance, and support to maintain productivity and quality.
+ Coordinate closely with Project Managers and Estimators to align on project schedules, materials, and scope requirements.
+ Supervise and perform excavation and grading activities, ensuring proper site preparation and adherence to plans and specifications.
+ Oversee installation and coordination of underground utilities, including storm, sewer, and water systems.
+ Manage pipe installation and broader site development tasks, ensuring correct installation methods and compliance with project requirements.
+ Monitor project progress, schedules, and quality to ensure milestones are met and projects are delivered on time.
+ Ensure compliance with safety standards, company policies, and jobsite protocols for all crew members and subcontractors.
+ Coordinate daily activities with General Contractors and other trades on-site to maintain smooth jobsite operations and resolve conflicts.
+ Complete daily reporting, including production, issues, and safety documentation, and communicate project updates to internal teams.
+ Support continuous improvement in field operations by identifying challenges, proposing solutions, and implementing best practices.
+ Represent the field operations professionally when interacting with project stakeholders, including site personnel and other partners.
Essential Skills
+ Experience in civil construction and sitework, including earthwork, excavation, and underground utilities.
+ Previous experience serving as a Superintendent, Foreman, or Lead on field crews in civil or sitework projects.
+ Proven ability to manage and lead field crews, including planning daily tasks and overseeing execution in the field.
+ Strong understanding of construction sequencing, scheduling, and jobsite coordination for civil and site development projects.
+ Hands-on experience with earthwork and excavation operations, including grading and site preparation.
+ Hands-on experience with underground utilities or piping, including storm, sewer, and water systems.
+ Ability to coordinate effectively with Project Managers, Estimators, General Contractors, and other trades.
+ Strong communication skills to convey expectations, provide updates, and maintain clear information flow with internal teams and project stakeholders.
+ Commitment to enforcing and maintaining jobsite safety standards and protocols.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
+ Construction management experience in civil or sitework projects.
+ Strong experience in site utilities work, including coordination and installation of utility infrastructure.
+ Desire and capability to grow into a lead or General Superintendent role as the organization expands.
+ Comfort working in both field and office settings, balancing hands-on supervision with administrative and coordination tasks.
Work Environment
This role operates in a mixed field and office environment, with approximately 70% of the time spent in the field and 30% in the office. Projects are located throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area, with occasional assignments in Eastern Missouri or Western Kansas, and no overnight travel required. The position works with tight-knit crews rather than large teams, providing a collaborative and hands-on atmosphere.
The work centers on commercial construction sitework, including excavation, grading, and underground utilities, using standard construction equipment and tools typical of civil and site development projects. The organization offers a company vehicle with a fuel card, a full benefits package, and a stable, long-term pipeline of local projects. Team members benefit from local work that allows them to return home each night, strong exposure to diverse commercial projects without being on the general contractor side, and clear opportunities for advancement as the company continues to grow.
