Job Title:

Civil Superintendent

Job Description

This Civil Superintendent role supports earthwork and site development projects across the Kansas City area, leading small field crews and coordinating closely with project management and estimating teams to successfully deliver civil and sitework scopes on commercial construction projects. The position focuses on excavation, underground utilities, and groundwork packages for multifamily developments, hospitals, retail centers, and other commercial builds, offering strong exposure to diverse projects and a clear path to grow into a lead or General Superintendent role as the company continues to expand.

Responsibilities

+ Manage day-to-day field operations for civil and sitework projects, ensuring work progresses safely and efficiently.

+ Oversee crews of approximately 3-5 field employees, driving productivity, quality, and adherence to project plans.

+ Coordinate closely with Project Managers and Estimators on schedules, materials, manpower, and scope to keep projects on track.

+ Supervise and perform work related to excavation and grading activities for commercial sites.

+ Lead and oversee installation of underground utilities, including storm, sewer, and water systems.

+ Direct pipe installation and general site development work, ensuring proper methods and standards are followed.

+ Monitor project progress, timelines, and quality benchmarks to ensure milestones are met and projects are delivered on schedule.

+ Ensure strict compliance with safety standards, jobsite protocols, and regulatory requirements for all field activities.

+ Coordinate effectively with General Contractors and other trades on-site to maintain smooth workflow and resolve conflicts.

+ Complete accurate daily reporting, including production quantities, issues, and safety notes, and communicate project updates to internal teams.

+ Support planning and sequencing of construction activities to optimize schedule and minimize rework.

+ Represent the field perspective in discussions with internal stakeholders, providing clear feedback on site conditions and resource needs.

Essential Skills

+ Several years of experience in civil construction and sitework, with a strong background in field operations.

+ Proven experience working as a Superintendent, Foreman, or Lead on earthwork and excavation projects.

+ Hands-on experience with underground utilities or piping, including storm, sewer, and water systems.

+ Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate field crews, typically groups of 3-5 team members.

+ Strong understanding of construction sequencing, scheduling, and jobsite coordination across multiple trades.

+ Ability to communicate effectively with internal teams, General Contractors, and project stakeholders.

+ Solid knowledge of safety standards and jobsite protocols, with a commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.

+ background in construction or construction management, with familiarity in civil/site utilities and site development work.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+ Experience delivering commercial sitework scopes on projects such as multifamily developments, hospitals, and retail centers.

+ Comfort working with tight-knit crew sizes rather than large, multi-layered teams.

+ Interest in growing into a lead or General Superintendent role as the organization expands its project portfolio.

+ Ability to balance field responsibilities with office-based tasks such as reporting and coordination.

+ Strong interpersonal skills to build effective working relationships with project teams and trade partners.

Work Environment

This role operates in a mixed field and office environment, with approximately 70% of time spent on active jobsites and 30% in an office setting for planning, coordination, and reporting. Projects are located throughout the Kansas City metro area, with occasional assignments in Eastern Missouri or Western Kansas, and are structured to avoid overnight travel so you are home each night.

The position offers a stable, long-term pipeline of local projects, tight-knit crew structures, and exposure to diverse commercial work without being on the general contractor side. The organization provides a company vehicle with a fuel card, a full benefits package, and a supportive culture that values safety, collaboration, and professional growth, including clear opportunities to advance into lead or General Superintendent responsibilities.
