Building Substitute Teacher, Full-Time

LOCATION:

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.

JOB GOAL:

Building Substitutes work on a full-time schedule for the duration of the 2024/2025 school year. In the absence of the classroom teacher, the Building Substitute Teacher enables each student to pursue his or her education as consistently and completely as possible by providing instruction, encouraging student progress, and managing the learning environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Report to your assigned building every day and be placed by the administrator to whatever unfilled absence is needed daily.

* Attendance on early release day is required. Duties will be assigned by the administrator.

* Adhere to the curriculum and lesson plans assigned by the administrators and/or regular classroom teacher.

* Manage the learning environment by handling non-instructional tasks efficiently, using instructional time appropriately, maintain an effective physical setting for classroom instruction and appropriate student behavior in the classroom.

* Implement classroom management practices that are consistent with the plans of the school.

* Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom.

* Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

* Seek out and respond to coaching to increase capacity to run an effective classroom, or other school assigned duties, that promotes high levels of student achievement.

* Remains at school during the entire school day unless excused by the principal, designated school representative, or KCKPS substitute administrator.

* Adheres to all district rules, regulations, policies, and additional job assigned duties given by KCKPS substitute staff.

* Maintains a professional appearance in accordance with district or school guidelines and policies.

* Actively participate in weekly staff development activities and meetings as designated by the school administrator or KCKPS substitute staff.

* Report daily activities at conclusion of the day as designated.

* Ability to move around the room to effectively monitor student work and behavior.

* Be courteous and professional to all stakeholders including students, families, administrators, staff, etc.

* Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Meets the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education, and the Kansas State Department of Education.

* Must possess a Bachelor's degree

* Hold, or can obtain, a Professional, Standard, Initial, Teacher Alternative Certification, or Emergency Substitute 45-day license issued by the Kansas State Department of Education.

* Building substitutes must be able to work five days per week.

* Successful completion of all assigned KCKPS Substitute Teacher Training.

* Experience working with students/children in an educational setting (after school program, student teaching, or similar experience)

COMMUNICATION

Maintains communication with teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.

LANGUAGE

SKILLS:
