TITLE: Head Coach - Girls Wrestling

LOCATION: Wyandotte HS

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated high school in the nation and #1 high school in Kansas according to U.S. News rankings. With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian.

To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.

JOB GOAL:

Responsible for all levels and all phases of the sport. Particular duties may be assigned to assistants, but the head coach is responsible for ensuring tasks are completed correctly and on schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Supervise student athletes during all facets of participation (competition travel, meetings, practices, etc.) to ensure activities are conducted in a safe environment and in keeping with district policies.
  • Maintain a variety of records to comply with district, athletic conference, state and KSHSAA requirements (pre‑participation physical exam, concussion form, insurance waiver, medical release, activity consent forms, try‑out participation agreement, emergency contact information, schedules, equipment inventory, game statistics, accurate squad roster, etc.).
  • Verify that no candidate is issued equipment or allowed to practice until they have completed required physical exams and forms; ensure transfer students meet KSHSAA eligibility; ensure all participating students have purchased required activity tickets.
  • Develop and submit practice schedules and other logistics, ensuring compliance with school and district policies.
  • Supervise practice sessions and maintain security of the locker room.
  • Report all injuries to proper school officials; follow injury reporting policy.
  • Support assigned athletic trainers and follow recommendations for student safety, injury and participation.
  • Support and conform to established decisions and policy decisions of the school and USD 500.
  • Organize a system for uniform and equipment checkout, maintain accurate inventory, enforce equipment care rules and ensure accountability at season’s end.
  • Inform administration of equipment needs to maintain safety and performance.
  • Maintain records of evaluation procedures; assess student athletes and provide performance feedback or team placement decisions.
  • Conduct and attend supporting activities (league meetings, pre/post‑season coaches meetings, parent orientations, recognition events, banquets, etc.).
  • Develop team and individual practice regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention, etc.).
  • Evaluate facility and playing field hazards; recommend modifications to reduce risk of injury.
  • Oversee coaching personnel and student managers; provide direction and monitor activities.
  • Guide coaching personnel in instructional techniques, practice organization, supervision guidelines and responsibilities.
  • Assign duties to coaching personnel and prepare a written evaluation for each coach at season’s conclusion.
  • Advise coaching personnel, parents and athletes on sportsmanship expectations; ensure awareness of KSHSAA Rule 52.
  • Monitor student athlete academic eligibility; provide appropriate intervention (counseling, tutoring, etc.) to maintain eligibility.
  • High school only:
    Report all team scores to media outlets and prepare public information releases.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director.

  • Certified teacher or qualify for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
