Job Description

TITLE: School Psychologist - Early Childhood (Special Education)

LOCATION: TBD

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students with 60+ languages spoken PS includes Sumner Academy and a large, diverse student population. The district employs about 4,000 staff, including more than 1,800 teachers.

JOB GOAL: The School Psychologist conducts assessments and interpretations of intellectual, adaptive, academic, social and emotional development; interprets results of psychological studies; applies state and federal policies/regulations; and develops strategies and interventions to address student needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Administers standardized and informal assessments to measure development and determine eligibility for services in compliance with state and federal requirements.
  • Assesses students’ functional capabilities and home/classroom environment to determine functional level and inform recommendations/placement.
  • Communicates with students, parents, teachers, other personnel, and outside agencies to evaluate situations, solve problems, resolve conflicts, provide information, and develop service plans.
  • Compiles information from multiple sources to produce comprehensive evaluation reports in accordance with guidelines.
  • Coordinates with community medical, social service and mental health agencies to determine appropriate interventions for students.
  • Counsels students, parents and/or guardians regarding progress toward objectives to support success at school and home.
  • Develops behavior plans and curriculum modifications to meet educational needs.
  • Facilitates meetings to ensure state and federal guidelines are followed.
  • Intervenes in inappropriate behavior to assist students in modifying behavior and developing interpersonal skills.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars as assigned.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g., student evaluations, memos, behavior plans, IEP recommendations, progress notes) for documentation and communication.
  • Researches resources and methods to address students’ goals.
  • Supervises interns, practicum students and others to support professional growth and program objectives.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient operation of the organization.
Qualifications
  • Meets the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and the Kansas State Department of Education.
  • Maintain a professional attitude with families and staff
  • Valid Kansas Master’s level certification
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and professional judgment
  • Demonstrated collaborative and consultative skills

Communication / Organization: Maintains communication with school personnel and families to enhance cooperative action meeting students’ educational needs. Utilizes technology effectively in performance of duties. Performs other related work as required.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions furnished in writing, orally, diagram, or schedule form.

Language

Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, procedures, or regulations; write reports and correspondence; present information effectively and respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the public.

Physical Demands: Regularly sit, walk, stand and talk or hear; occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds; may push items such as a wheelchair or furniture; may visit a child’s home; vision requirements include close, distance and depth perception; reasonable accommodations may be made.
