The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and where 60+ languages are spoken in the homes of our students. With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas. Our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. The district employs approximately 4,000 employees, including more than 1,800 teachers.

JOB GOAL:

To facilitate student comprehension and application of concepts, skills and behaviors that contribute to the development of mature, able and responsible members of society. To ensure continuous improvement in state and national performance levels to prepare students for college and careers in a global society, and at every level, performance is on-track and on-time for success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Ability to implement 21st Century Skills into the curriculum.
  • Ability to work a full duty day in the location or locations assigned.
  • Assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, student outcomes and Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instruction/learning strategies and activities compatible with the facility and students.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom and participate in behavior management across the site.
  • Communicate instructional expectations and student progress to students and parents (in writing or verbally).
  • Assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutions and reporting purposes.
  • Collaborate with other program personnel in planning instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum.
  • Participate in professional growth and development activities, including staff meetings and in-service training as required or assigned.
  • Assist in documenting student progress by maintaining and submitting records and reports.
  • Ensure the classroom and instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe and conducive to learning.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities as requested by the principal.
  • Participate as a regular teacher in IEP meetings for IDEA students.
  • Maintain good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the assigned grade level.
  • Maintain knowledge of early childhood program studies related to mission, goals and organization.
  • Continually study and learn current research and theory.
  • Plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers, including family advocacy and home visits where applicable.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain professional demeanor, appearance and interactions at all times.
  • Move around the room to monitor student work and behavior as needed.
  • Take attendance and maintain attendance records according to policy.
  • Know and follow Section 504 and IDEA amendments.
  • Maintain collaboration with colleagues and be courteous and professional.
  • Other duties as assigned.

COMMUNICATION/ORGANIZATION: Maintains communication with school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action meeting student educational needs. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

LANGUAGE

SKILLS:

Ability to read and analyze professional journals, procedures, or regulations; write reports and correspondence; present information clearly to administrators, staff, parents, students, and the public.
