The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students, with over 60 different languages spoken in students’ homes. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the 6th highest rated high school in the nation and 1st in Kansas according to US News rankings.
With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, KCKPS is the fifth largest district in Kansas. The student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. The district employs around 4,000 employees, including more than 1,800 teachers.
JOB GOAL
To facilitate student comprehension and application of concepts, skills, and behaviors that contribute to the development of a mature, able, and responsible member of society.
To ensure continuous improvement in state and national performance levels, preparing students for college and careers in a global society, and to keep performance on-track and on-time for success.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Implement 21st Century Skills into the curriculum.
- Work a full duty day at the assigned location(s).
- Assess student abilities relative to desired educational goals and Head Start Performance Standards.
- Plan and employ a variety of instruction/learning strategies and activities suitable for the physical facility and student needs.
- Manage classroom behavior and contribute to school-wide behavior management.
- Communicate instructional expectations, student progress, or lack of progress to students and parents, in writing or verbally.
- Assess student achievement and maintain assessment documentation for reporting.
- Collaborate with program personnel to plan effective instructional goals, objectives, methods, and curriculum.
- Participate in professional growth and development activities, including staff meetings and in-service training.
- Assist in documenting student progress by maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
- Ensure the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning.
- Participate in extracurricular activities as requested by the principal.
- Attend IEP meetings for IDEA students.
- Demonstrate knowledge of content, curriculum, and instructional methods for the assigned specialty.
- Apply knowledge of student growth and development for the grade level.
- Understand early childhood program of studies related to mission, goals, and organization.
- Study current research and theory continuously.
- Plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and student needs.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, peers, and the family advocate system.
- Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
- Exhibit excellent human relations skills.
- Maintain physical and emotional ability to perform required work in a fast-paced, high-intensity environment.
- Move around the classroom to monitor work and behavior effectively.
- Show patience, caring, and a desire to help each student succeed.
- Take attendance and keep attendance registers per Board policy.
- Follow Section 504 and IDEA amendments.
- Conduct oneself courteously and professionally at all times.
- Maintain a neat and professional appearance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
COMMUNICATION/ORGANIZATION
Maintain communication with school personnel, parents, and guardians to enhance cooperative actions that meet educational needs.
Utilize existing technology effectively in performing duties.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and handle situations with limited standardization, interpreting instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
