Title: Paraprofessional 2

Job Goal: The Paraprofessional 2 provides support to the instructional program within an assigned specialized classroom, assisting the Lead Teacher in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students in the regular or self‑contained classroom; implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non‑classroom time; and providing information to appropriate school personnel.

Essential Functions:

• Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising/lead teacher to support students in various school environments.
• Administers tests, homework, make‑up work, etc., supporting lead teachers in the special education classroom (e.g., life skills, autism, BSC specialized classrooms).
• Assists the special education teacher in creating lesson plans for assigned specialized classroom students.
• Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students in maintaining personal hygiene.
• Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and/or parents to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives under the lead teacher’s direction.
• Implements and adheres to lesson plans created with the special education teacher for the assigned students.
• Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team under the lead teacher’s supervision for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions.
• Maintains instructional materials to ensure availability of items and to meet mandated requirements.
• Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments (e.g., special education specialized classrooms, assemblies, field trips) to maintain a safe learning environment.
• Provides instruction to students in individual and group activities under the lead teacher’s supervision, reinforcing instructional objectives and implementing IEP plans.
• Attends meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
• May administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional to meet immediate health care needs.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED certificate.
• Completion of 48 hours at an institution of higher education.
• Associate’s degree or higher.

Pass a state‑approved assessment. Approved assessments include Work Keys, Para Pro, or Para Educator. If you do not possess a state‑approved assessment, KCKPS will offer one credential assessment test to candidates recommended for hire.

Job‑related experience is preferred.

Communication/Organization: Maintains communication with school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action that meets the educational needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties and performs other related work as required.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Language

Skills:

Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.
