Clinical Assistant Professor - School Of Health Professions (Health Information Management)

The Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Information Management (HIM) teaches online and in-person courses and reports to the HIM Chair in the KU School Of Health Professions. The role focuses on teaching and supporting accreditation compliance for undergraduate HIM and graduate health informatics academic programs. Teaching duties include teaching health informatics courses to undergraduate and graduate audiences. Responsibilities further include departmental, school, university, and industry service, participation in student recruitment and outreach, as well as mentoring students.

Course assignments vary by departmental needs. This non-tenure position's rank and salary depend on the candidate's education and experience.

Teach undergraduate & graduate courses

  • Develop, revise, and teach in person and online health informatics courses. Supplement course delivery with timely insight into industry expectations, practices, and norms.
  • Set up courses in learning management systems in accordance with HIM departmental standards.
  • Conduct consistent assessment of learning and use tools such as rubrics for objective scoring. Evaluate according to the criteria outlined in the course syllabi, and grading must align with established policies.
  • Support students and refer them to appropriate resources.

Coordinate curriculum with adjunct faculty

  • Partner with adjunct faculty teaching health informatics courses as well as the department chair, to ensure sections of courses taught by adjuncts adhere to and remain in compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Ensure courses are updated within learning management systems in accordance with HIM departmental standards.

Other

  • Communicate with all stakeholders.
  • Participate in committee work or special projects in the Department of HIM, KU School of Health Professions, University of Kansas Medical Center, and/or the industry, as determined by the Department Chair.
  • Assist with graduate student advising and scholarly projects.

Required Qualifications

Education:

Master's degree in related discipline such as health informatics, data analytics, health information management, or similar.

Work Experience:

  • 5 years of experience in healthcare working in health informatics capacities and/or higher education work settings.
  • Experience using various technologies including health information systems (e.g., electronic health records, clinical information systems, clinical decision-support systems, or similar).
  • Experience working with health data.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

Doctoral degree

Work Experience:

  • Higher education experience, including on campus and online teaching as well as participating in curriculum development.
  • Experience with online course technologies such as learning management systems and lecture capture systems.
  • Evidence of previous scholarship, such as article publication and/or research.
  • Professional service to the health informatics profession via service to professional associations such as AMIA, HIMSS, AHIMA, etc. as evidenced by application materials.
