Job Description

Title: Paraprofessional 2 (Health Services)

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students in a diverse community. The district includes 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college‑career academies/high schools.

Job Goal: Provide support to the instructional program within assigned specialized classroom by assisting the Lead Teacher in supervising, caring for, and instructing special‑needs students in both regular and self‑contained classrooms.

Essential Functions
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under lead teacher direction for a variety of environments.
  • Administer tests, homework, makeup work, and other assignments for special‑education classrooms.
  • Assist the special‑education teacher in creating lesson plans for assigned students.
  • Assist medically fragile or physically disabled students with personal hygiene.
  • Communicate with staff and parents to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Implement lesson plans created with the special‑education teacher.
  • Implement behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders.
  • Maintain instructional materials to ensure availability and meet mandated requirements.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods in various settings to maintain a safe environment.
  • Provide instruction to students in individual and group activities under lead teacher supervision.
  • Attend meetings and in‑service presentations to acquire and convey relevant information.
  • Administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Complete 48 hours of higher‑education coursework.
  • Obtain an associate’s or higher degree.

Pass a state‑approved assessment. Approved assessments include Work Keys, Para Pro, or Para Educator. If you do not have a state‑approved assessment, KCKPS will offer one credential assessment test to candidates recommended for hire.

Job‑related experience is preferred.

Communication / Organization

Maintain communication with school personnel, parents, and guardians to enhance cooperative action that meets students’ educational needs. Utilize technology effectively in performing duties.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and interpret various instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or regulations. Ability to write reports, curriculum, and correspondence, and present information effectively to administrators, staff, parents, students, and the public.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, and depth perception. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.

Work Environment

The environment is generally loud. Employees are responsible for students’ safety, output, and well‑being.

Apply current research and theory to instructional programs. Plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and student needs. Establish effective relationships with students, peers, parents, and the community. Speak and write clearly and concisely.
