Job DescriptionThe Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. The district is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest‑rated high school in the nation and #1 in Kansas, and includes 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools. The student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian, and more than 1,800 teachers work in the district.
JOB GOAL: The role of Paraprofessional 1 is to provide instructional support within assigned classrooms, assisting the Lead Teacher in supervising, caring for, and instructing students with special needs in both regular and self‑contained settings. Responsibilities include implementing instruction plans, monitoring student behavior during non‑classroom time, and communicating progress to appropriate school personnel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising/lead teacher to support students across content areas.
- Administer tests, homework, make‑up work, and other assignments to support teachers in both general and special education classrooms.
- Assist medically fragile or physically disabled students with personal hygiene maintenance.
- Communicate with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives under the lead teacher’s direction.
- Implement behavioral plans designed by the IEP team, reinforcing learning concepts and supporting students with behavior disorders.
- Follow lesson plans created by general and special education teachers for assigned students.
- Maintain instructional materials to ensure availability and meet required standards.
- Monitor students during periods in various school settings (e.g., classrooms, assemblies, field trips) to maintain a safe learning environment.
- Provide instruction in individual and group activities under the lead teacher’s supervision, reinforcing instructional objectives and implementing IEP plans.
- Attend career‑building and in‑service presentations such as first aid, CPR, and emergency procedures.
- Administer first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional when needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective operation of the work unit.
- High school diploma or GED certificate.
- Complete 48 hours at a higher‑education institution.
- Obtain an associate’s or higher degree.
Pass a state‑approved assessment. Approvable assessments include Workkeys, Para Pro, or Para Educator. If you do not have a state‑approved assessment, KCKPS will offer one credential assessment test to candidates recommended for hire.
Job‑related experience is preferred.
