Utility Technician
Reporting to the Utilities Foreman, the Utility Operator is responsible for performing a variety of labor-intensive tasks within the Utilities Department. This includes assisting with the maintenance, operation, and repair of Water Treatment (level 2/3), water distribution, wastewater collection, and Wastewater Treatment systems (level
1). This role requires working as part of a team to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of services while maintaining safety standards, following established procedures, and responding to emergencies as needed.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Monitor and inspect plant equipment and systems to identify malfunctions and ensure optimal operation.
- Patrol plant facilities to check on pumps, monitors, chlorinators, and other critical equipment.
- Perform regular maintenance and repair of equipment to ensure continuous, efficient operation.
- Assist in the assembly, installation, and repair of various plant equipment.
- Conduct meter readings and record data as required.
- May be required to train for and participate in any emergency response declared by the County.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the Utilities Department’s operations.
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Certification in Water Distribution, Water Treatment, Wastewater Collection, and Wastewater Treatment (preferred, as per Alberta regulations) is an asset.
- WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System), TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Goods), H2S (Hydrogen Sulphide Awareness), Confined Space Entry Training, and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certifications would be an asset.
- Process and SCADA experience are preferred.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a current driver’s abstract.
- Current criminal record check.
- Proficient in computer use, including Microsoft Suite and database systems.
- Ability to interact calmly and professionally with ratepayers, employees, management, and Council.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Good mechanical aptitude.
- Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to interpret, implement, and adhere to organizational policies and procedures.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
- Strong analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
- All personnel working at Big Lakes County are governed by the County’s Health & Safety Policy.
- Ensures all operations are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with County Policies and Occupational Health & Safety Regulations.
- Must follow all safe job procedures.
- Ensure proper ergonomic requirements are met and good ergonomic procedures are practiced.
- Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry up to 23 kg, as well as bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, and crawling.
- Exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, loud noises and outdoor conditions.
- Working in and around excavations.
- Regular driving required as part of the role.
- Normal workweek is 40 hours, with rotational on call schedule.
