Job OverviewThe Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. With 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, it is the fifth largest district in Kansas. The role provides direct nursing services to students and staff, maximizing health and wellness in the school community in accordance with district, state, and federal regulations, the Nurse Practice Act, and professional standards.
EssentialFunctions
- Provide professional nursing services, first aid, and emergency care to students and staff guided by the nursing process.
- Perform CPR and use an AED when available.
- Administer medication with proper documentation.
- Carry out nursing procedures within scope of practice.
- Maintain accurate medical records to comply with state mandates, including immunizations, physical exams, and medical conditions.
- Conduct mandated vision and hearing screening procedures.
- Provide follow‑up evaluations on students as required.
- Assess and make referrals for suspected abuse or neglect, acting as a mandated reporter.
- Ensure the school health program complies with federal, state, and local laws and policies.
- Manage the health room efficiently.
- Prepare health reports for supervisor and the health department.
- Collaborate with agencies to design and provide services for students.
- Work with teachers on health education and the state curriculum (K‑12).
- Serve as a health resource and provide staff development on health topics.
- Contribute to the development of the school emergency health and crises plan.
- Delegate, monitor, and evaluate aides or assistants when needed.
- Identify students with special health care needs.
- Develop emergency action plans for students at risk of medical crises.
- Monitor individual health care plans (IHP) for invasive procedures performed during school hours.
- Provide health‑related consultation as a member of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team.
- Work an 8‑hour duty day at the assigned location(s).
- Exhibit physical and emotional ability to perform required work and move about in a fast‑paced environment.
- Current Registered Nurse licensure in Kansas.
- Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation program completion.
- Maintain CPR status according to American Heart Association Guidelines.
- Computer literacy and competency in use of existing technology.
- Experience in school nursing (preferred).
Maintain communication with teachers, school personnel, parents, and guardians to enhance cooperative action for student needs. Provide health services, information, and counseling in an effective and positive manner. Complete accident/incident reports for students and staff, compile data for statistical purposes, and maintain confidentiality of educational records.
OrganizationMaintain a daily log of school and staff visits and documentation. Maintain the health office environment and supplies. Utilize existing technology effectively and perform related work as required.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to solve practical problems and handle varied situations with limited standardization, including interpreting instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Language SkillsRead, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations; write reports, school nurse correspondence, and protocols; present information effectively and respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the public.
