Job Overview

Telecom Electronic Technician II – a full‑time (40 hrs/wk) position with 6 days a week (5 regular days plus one on‑call day). Subject to on‑call (24/6), overtime, alternate shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift assignments governed by union agreement, typically based on seniority.

Moderate travel is required. While the work location is headquartered, you will travel and work within the assigned seniority region at times for extended periods.

Training for this position is company‑paid and includes on‑the‑job and classroom instruction, with travel to the BNSF Training Center.

Responsibilities
  • Install, repair, and maintain various telecommunications equipment, including radios, digital microwave (MW), and radio frequency (RF) data link equipment.
  • Install, assemble, repair, adjust, test and maintain wired and wireless systems and devices, automatic equipment identification (AEI) systems, IP networks, VoIP, cameras, RF communications, voice and data communications, front and end train devices, and solder electrical/electronic components.
  • Perform work in a safety‑sensitive environment under diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, sleet), uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.
  • Adhere to safety rules, policies, federal and state regulations, and wear required personal protective equipment. Participate in safety conversations and respond to concerns and emergencies.
  • Relocation assistance is not available and there is a 120‑day probationary period.
Qualifications
  • Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance in obtaining or extending employment authorization.
  • At least 18 years of age or will be by the anticipated start date.
  • Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
  • Capability to work safely in the above conditions.
  • Ability to work the above shift hours.
  • Ability to meet the above travel requirements.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating (speak, hear, and understand) English.
  • Ability to work indoors primarily at a work bench, equipment bay, installation garage, or RF transmission facility.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to visually distinguish colors – red, blue, green, yellow.
  • Possess a valid state‑issued driver’s license.
  • Experience with soldering work.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic diagrams and schematics.
  • Minimum 2 years of verifiable electronics experience or post‑high‑school training.
  • Ability to use hands and hand tools for holding, grasping, turning, and pulling activities.
  • Ability to climb on/off equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally work on top of locomotives and other equipment.
  • Ability to bend, walk, stand, and sit occasionally with breaks.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures; wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Successfully complete company‑administered Fall Protection Training.
  • Pass the Electronic Technician II qualification test with 80% or better.
