Controller
Location: Kansas City, MO (Hybrid/Onsite)
Position Type: Full-Time
Reports To: CEO / Board Treasurer
Position SummaryThe Controller leads all financial functions of the organization, ensuring strong financial stewardship, accountability, and compliance. This position oversees accounting operations, budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting, internal controls, audit coordination, and strategic financial planning. The Controller works collaboratively with senior leadership and the Board to support mission delivery and long-term sustainability.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management & Reporting
- Manage daily accounting operations including general ledger, payables, invoicing, receivables, payroll, and bank reconciliations
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Review and present financial reports to the Board of Directors
- Manage cash flow planning and forecasting
- Lead month-end and year-end closing processes
Budgeting & Strategic Planning
- Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor budget performance
- Provide variance analysis and financial insights to leadership
- Support long-range financial planning and scenario analysis
Compliance & Controls
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and nonprofit reporting standards
- Manage audit preparation and work with external auditors
- Develop and maintain strong internal control policies and procedures
- Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local reporting and tax requirements
Grant & Fund Accounting
- Track and manage restricted vs. unrestricted funds
- Monitor grant expenditures and prepare financial reports for grantors and funders as required
- Ensure accurate grant tracking and compliance with grant requirements and donor restrictions
Leadership & Collaboration
- Advise the Executive Director and leadership team on financial strategy and business decisions
- Coordinate with external accounting/finance consultants as needed
- Serve as financial liaison to the Board of Directors
Minimum
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting/finance experience
- Strong nonprofit accounting knowledge and familiarity with fund accounting
- Proficient with Quick Books Online and Stripe
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Preferred
- CPA or equivalent credential
- Experience with audits and IRS Form 990 preparation
- Experience supervising staff
- $80,000 - $90,000 annually
