Position: Assistant Sustainability Specialist - Environmental Services (Kansas City)

Description

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Assistant Sustainability Specialist to assist with the development and delivery of corporate sustainability strategies and programs. The selected candidate will support the Sustainability Compliance & Strategy Lead and work closely with other members of the Sustainability Department and others across the Burns & McDonnell organization. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in developing and implementing corporate sustainability strategies or corporate sustainability reporting, either as a consultant or internally during previous employment (including co-op and internships).

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute as a member of multidisciplinary, cross-functional teams to support the implementation of internal initiatives that advance our corporate sustainability performance and reporting.
  • Assist with tracking and responding to client-initiated requests for corporate sustainability data in the form of RFIs, RFPs, supplier registration platforms, and third-party assessments (e.g., Eco Vadis, CDP, TSP).
  • Assist in conducting client and peer benchmarking and analyze results from sustainability assessments to identify opportunities to improve Burns & McDonnell’s sustainability performance and streamline processes.
  • Assist in supporting compliance with sustainability-related regulations and client requirements, including evaluating emerging requirements for applicability and level of effort.
  • Assist in supporting the development of Burns & McDonnell’s annual Global Sustainability Report, coordinating with stakeholders across the organization for content development and approvals.
  • Assist in supporting other Sustainability Department tasks as needed. This may include data collection for Burns & McDonnell’s greenhouse gas inventory and waste and water reporting, contributing to supply chain sustainability engagement efforts, and supporting client-facing sustainability projects (if needed).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree in Sustainability, Environmental Studies, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, or a related field from an accredited program required.
  • 1-5 years of experience relevant to the sustainability field preferred.
  • Experience with sustainability reporting frameworks and/or greenhouse gas emissions accounting preferred.
  • Public speaking experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of environment/sustainable business practices, regulatory/statutory dynamics, and current trends in the profession.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in sustainability and ESG topics relevant to our operations, including decarbonization, greenhouse gas accounting, climate resilience, waste reduction, circular economy, and water stewardship strongly preferred.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including the use of artificial intelligence to execute and summarize strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with teams.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with internal and external stakeholders across various areas of the business and technical disciplines strongly preferred.
  • Ability to apply intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad assignments and devise new approaches to problems encountered.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
