Position: Physician (Psychiatrist) - Mental Health Intensive Case Management (MHICM)

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Program approval - award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements (if applicable) stated in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • Doctor of medicine or an equivalent medical degree.
  • Degree obtained from a VA‑approved medical school in the year the course of study was completed.
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency training: completed an ACGME or AOA‑approved core specialty residency that qualifies for board certification, or a non‑U.S. residency followed by at least five years of verified U.S. practice deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
  • Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis; PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged, but they have a scope of practice allowing restricted duties under supervision.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred experience:

    outpatient care with patients with Serious Mental Illness (SMI).

  • Physical requirements:

    pre‑employment physical; ability to lift 15‑44 pounds; push, reach, use fingers, walk, stand, kneel and maintain rapid mental and muscular coordination; near vision correctable at 13–16 inches to Jaeger 1–4; far vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other; depth perception and basic color discrimination; hearing aid permitted.
Duties
  • Work schedule:

    Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm with required on‑call rotation (nights, weekends, holidays).
  • EDRP authorized:
    Former participants ineligible.

  • Pay:
    Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases.
  • Paid time off: 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid CME).

  • Patient care:
    Treat a panel of patients with Serious Mental Illness under MHICM. Coordinate care with case managers and serve as psychiatrist for Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center patients.
  • Serve as subject‑matter expert for complex SMI treatments (e.g., long‑acting injectables, clozapine).
  • Perform clinical, teaching, and administrative duties typical of facility psychiatrists, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and documentation.
