Job Purpose

The Education Programs Manager will provide leadership in the development of education and public program initiatives for all ages. This position will develop, implement, and evaluate a full range of education and special museum programs for school children, educators, family, and public audiences based on jazz, neighborhood, and connected cultural history. This position will also manage the signature Jazz Storytelling early childhood program and connect the Jazz Academy middle and high school program to the suite of education offerings.

They will work closely with the docent manager, KC Jazz Academy Manager, curators and other museum personnel, in addition to collaborating with school teachers and administrators, other cultural organizations, and independent consultants or community advisors (where applicable), to implement, evaluate or support community and/or school programs. The Education Programs Manager will have a passion for music and history and be able to translate that passion and skill into enriching learning programs relating to music education history that also support and expand the mission of the museum.

This position will report to the Deputy Director and is a core member of the Visitor Experience team.

Duties and Daily Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, manage, and evaluate all AJM educational programming and educational initiatives, including partnerships, curricula, and community programs.
  • Apply current museum educational trends and theories to all programs.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with educators, schools, districts, educator organizations and resource groups.
  • Acts as a communication liaison between AJM and area schools, faculty, staff, and students, as well as between AJM and area community groups to develop program initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with docent lead to fully coordinate and support school tour programming.
  • Work with curatorial staff in planning education related content for exhibit, and AJM’s website.
  • Supervise Jazz Storytelling Program working with teaching artists that implement that curricula.
  • Supervise and coordinate with KC Jazz Academy Manager needs for program including performances.
  • Supervise and implement education and public programs, including weekends and evenings, as necessary.
  • Develops and implements evaluation elements for educational and public programs.
  • Assist with maintaining a master calendar of public programs and events.
  • Perform finance related duties, such as administer program budgets, process purchases, record expenses, etc. related to the development of educational programs and events.
  • Assist with preparation of grant applications and reports and help to collect and maintain complete and accurate quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Conducts onsite, offsite and distance learning education programs and classes.
