The College and Career Counselor develops, coordinates, and oversees Lutheran South’s comprehensive college and career counseling program. This role provides individualized guidance to students and families in grades 9–12 as they explore postsecondary options including four-year colleges, community colleges, technical and trade programs, apprenticeships, military service, and workforce pathways.

Grounded in Lutheran theology and the Christian understanding of vocation, the College and Career Counselor helps students discern how their God-given gifts, interests, and abilities may be used in service to others. This position works closely with academic counselors, faculty, administrators, parents, and external partners to support LuSo’s Strategic Goal of Comprehensive and Individualized College Preparation.

College and Career Counseling
  • Provide individualized college and career counseling for approximately 160 seniors annually.
  • Prepare approximately 160 juniors each year for the college application process, including timelines, testing strategies, essays, and applications.
  • Meet regularly with students and parents to discuss postsecondary planning, vocational discernment, and decision-making.
  • Assist students in interpreting career assessments and developing postsecondary plans using Schoolinks.
College Applications and Documentation
  • Write letters of recommendation, advocate for the completion of letter requests on behalf of the students, and complete counselor evaluations and supplemental materials.
  • Process transcript requests and ensure timely submission of academic records.
  • Track college applications, acceptances, scholarship awards, and enrollment decisions for graduating seniors.
Programs, Events, and Family Education
  • Design and implement workshops and informational events addressing college planning, financial aid, scholarships, essays, athletic recruiting, apprenticeships, and military options.
  • Coordinate and host on-campus visits by college admissions representatives, military recruiters, and trade organizations.
External Partnerships and Professional Engagement
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with college and university admissions representatives.
  • Remain actively involved in professional organizations such as SLACC, NACAC, and MoACAC.
  • Stay current with local and national trends in college admissions, financial aid, and postsecondary education.
Scholarships, Testing, and Specialized Programs
  • Oversee the Missouri A+ Scholarship Program, including enrollment, progress tracking, reporting, and transcript verification.
  • Promote and support student participation in LuSo’s ACT preparation program.
  • Assist academic counselors with standardized testing coordination and reporting as needed.
  • Identify and promote local, regional, and national scholarship opportunities and assist students with scholarship searches, applications, essays, interviews, and recommendation materials.
Dual Credit, NCAA, and NAIA Coordination
  • Serve as the SLU 1818 Dual Credit Program Coordinator.
  • Advise students on AP and dual credit opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate course descriptions and student transcripts in NCAA and NAIA eligibility portals.
Qualifications
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Lutheran education.
  • Caring Christian man or woman of faith and an active member of a Christian church.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with students, parents, and faculty.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Collaborative, flexible team member committed to student advocacy.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Three to five years of experience in a school counseling or college counseling setting is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Schoolinks, Google Workspace, and college application platforms.
