The Senior Rail Project Engineer will serve as a Rail Site Development Engineer for the Rail Team, supporting rail and industrial development projects of varying size and complexity. This role requires a highly motivated professional with strong technical expertise in civil site development, particularly as it relates to rail infrastructure. The Senior Rail Project Engineer will provide technical leadership, coordinate multidisciplinary design efforts, and support project execution across multiple regional offices.
Key Responsibilities- Direct and coordinate work associated with the study, analysis, and design of civil site development infrastructure systems, including but not limited to rail and stormwater systems.
- Lead and support rail site development design efforts for industrial and rail-related projects of all sizes.
- Coordinate activities across multiple engineering disciplines on projects of moderate to significant scope, or across multiple smaller projects.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and technical direction to less experienced engineers and technical staff.
- Assist with supervision of staff, task assignment, and workload management on major projects.
- Regularly coordinate with internal design team members, clients, subconsultants, utility companies, and other project stakeholders.
- Perform standard civil engineering design tasks using established engineering principles, techniques, and procedures.
- Participate as a key contributor on multi-disciplinary project teams.
- Support task leaders and project managers with technical execution, scheduling, and project deliverables.
- Work closely with senior staff on advanced technical aspects of projects.
- Perform quality control and quality assurance reviews of engineering documents, plans, and specifications.
- Support EPC project delivery efforts when applicable.
- Travel between Kansas City, St. Louis, and Omaha offices as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Collaborate with a multi-discipline team of engineers and technicians to perform site civil design and analysis for rail projects.
- Apply expert knowledge of standard civil engineering techniques and procedures to complex design challenges.
- Lead discipline‑specific design efforts and delegate work effectively to project team members.
- Resolve technical and coordination issues in a collaborative, team‑oriented environment.
- One of the following education and experience combinations is required:
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an ABET‑accredited program AND a minimum of 7 years of civil engineering experience; or
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET‑accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, AND a minimum of 7 years of civil engineering experience; or
- Master's Degree in Civil Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of civil engineering experience.
- EPC project experience preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive civil engineering experience with a strong preference for rail and/or open rail design experience.
- Expert knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
- Strong computer proficiency with engineering and design software, including but not limited to AutoCAD, Micro Station, Civil 3D, BIM (Revit), PLS, PLS‑CADD, RISA‑3D, MathCAD, and hydraulic, hydrologic, pavement, and civil analysis programs.
- Demonstrated experience leading discipline design efforts on large projects and delegating tasks to project team members.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to work methodically in a quantitative problem‑solving environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and proven abilities in facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem‑solving.
- Ability to perform detailed quality reviews of engineering documents and specifications.
- Ability and willingness to travel as required.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
