The City of North Kansas City is seeking a Water Plant Operator to join our Public Works team. This is an entry-level position with opportunities for advancement through experience and Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) certifications. This role is ideal for someone interested in building a long-term career in municipal water treatment operations.
Position OverviewThe Water Plant Operator performs technical work supporting municipal water pumping and treatment plant operations. Responsibilities include monitoring plant systems, performing routine inspections and maintenance, conducting water quality testing, and ensuring regulatory compliance. This position works independently during assigned shifts and responds to operational needs and emergencies as required.
Shift Schedule (Night Shift)- Week 1: Wednesday – Saturday, 3:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m.
- Week 2: Thursday – Saturday, 3:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m.
Pay Range: $22.90-$30.00
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Monitor and record water flow, pressure, hydraulic, and electrical demand readings
- Perform laboratory testing on water and sludge samples for operational and regulatory purposes
- Maintain chemical treatment levels and operate gas chlorination equipment, including changing one-ton chlorine cylinders
- Inspect, maintain, clean, and repair pumps, filters, compressors, feeders, and related plant equipment
- Operate water wells and pumps
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and operational reports using paper and computerized systems
- Monitor inventory levels and maintain adequate supplies for plant operations
- Perform general facility maintenance and housekeeping duties
- Provide courteous and professional customer service to internal and external stakeholders
- Assist with special projects and perform related duties as assigned
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts
- Promotions based on experience and Missouri DNR water certifications
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain state certification as a MO-C Water Operator within 1-year of employment.
- Basic math and computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and SCADA systems
- Knowledge of or ability to learn water treatment processes, sampling, and analysis
- Ability to safely handle chemicals such as chlorine, lime, and carbon dioxide
- Understanding of industrial safety practices, including confined spaces and high-voltage environments
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Ability to work independently and remain calm under pressure during emergencies
- Strong interpersonal skills
Physical Requirements
- Indoor and outdoor work with exposure to varying weather conditions
- Work in confined spaces, elevated locations, and around mechanical and electrical hazards
- Ability to lift up to 100 pounds (with assistance or equipment as needed)
- Physical activities include standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and manual dexterity
